Today's Ride

The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun, for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." ...

Yesterday was round 4 of the SWXC series from Wheal Jane, a former quarry/mine turned earth extraction/reclaimation site. Apparently the course was terrible last year so they've invested a lot of time the past 3 weeks getting one together, and it paid off. It was excellent. Just the right amount of elevation and technical sections. With a few other events on including a national race, it wasn't the fullest roster which spelt bad news for me in #operationnotlast.

12/13 and only 1 lap down compared with previous rounds because I knew I needed to put the hammer down. I was only 3 minutes behind 11th and catching them on lap times. This is a notable step-up from previous rounds. I'm competing with some of the best in the region, so I need to stop beating myself up and enjoy the experience more, which I did.

Pretty sure I hit a new speed record on one descent. It was how I imagine being shot out of a cannon. My face and bottomed out suspension say it all 🤣

The guy in the maroon top bottom right won the vets I think and he lapped me just before I started lap 4, so I thought that'd be my last lap, so I was well pleased I got the bonus 5th one in.

Thanks goodness for quality modern bikes. This would have been a disaster on retro...not least a gazillion punctures. There were some squeaks and squeals near the end thanks to the pretty deep water crossing, but once again Bee was on point 💪👍💕

A dull summer's day today. Even duller at dusk. 18C, but felt cooler than that. 100% cloud cover. Greeeeeyness.

The Park was deserted apart from two bored policemen who stopped me to ask me if I had seen anyone with a fish or fishing rod. I told them that I hadn't seen anyone at all since I had entered the park 35 minutes ago. The first policeman proceeded to ask me what I was riding and gave me a blank look when I told them. "It's an old mountain bike" I said. "You should get a new one, those old ones are not as safe as new ones" said the second policeman. "I built this one myself", I said "but I'll bear that in mind". "Well it looks shiny enough" said the first one as he got back in their car.

I though about taking a picture for 'Today's ride', but I had a sense that they were looking for something 'to do' and didn't want to be part of any further riveting conversations.. and rode on.

The park was quiet and a lot of wildlife was 'out and about' in the absence of humans. Especially the rabbits, there are loads of them this year and they parted and darted off to their burrows as I rode down this path.

I got an alert on my phone that it was due to rain in 30 mins, so I headed for home passing the deer keeping the lawn short by the fountain. The grass here is normally full of Goose Sh*t, I guess it must be tasty.

This is one of my faster mountain bikes so I mashed it home quicker than usual. The rain started just as I got home.

... As I was leaving the park I saw the two policemen again, talking to another guy. On the floor, between them was a fishing rod and a Sainsbury's bag with two large fish on top of it.

Planned to go for a morning ride, but the day didn’t go to plan, so I didn’t get out on the bike until the afternoon. It was rather overcast, with the constant threat of rain. IMG_4367.jpeg There were dinosaurs in the woods too! IMG_4371.jpeg I made it safely to Houghton Forest and had some fun on the bike trails that crisscross the woodland. IMG_4383.jpeg It didn’t rain, and by the time I was nearly home, there was even a hint of blue sky. IMG_4381.jpeg
