Yo Eddy for the 21st Century- update: plans for phase two.

The Grello colour match is amazing, particularly as I understand that it is so hard to achieve (something about a red overspray or lacquer?) and the detail of the project is impressive.

But I have to confess that it feels wrong to me. I'm not quite sure why this is so (snob? purist? I like to think I am neither but that may be a conceit) but it doesn't matter what I think as it's your bike, built as something that you can ride in all weathers, that's great.

Please promise you won't enter it in BoTM though.....

I can't enter it in BoTM Ed, its covered in crap and has a big scratch down the chainstay now :?
I know exactly how you feel, I did ponder over the ethics for quite some time. However, there are days, routes or adventures where a retro steed in its ourest for just doesn't cut the mustard and a modern bike has to be used (We are not all men of steely nerves like your good self). In the interests of self preservation I needed something with brakes that work. This bike perfectly fills that need.

Thanks for you comments on paint by the way but a little clarification. It is 'Team Violet' that has a red pearl laquer over the base colour. Grellow just has a clear finish. It was a bastard to get right and the chips on the chainstay show just how much paint you have to put on to get it solid. Its going to be almost impossible to touch up.

Don't see the problem with it really if you want to ride it all year round and haven't got the time to maintain rim brakes afteer wet/mud use.

A few pics from the first ride. Friday was recce day for this year's Big Dirty Weekender II. Bike was faultless apart from the seatpost slipping down a few times. Handling was superb on the twisty Yorkshire Moorland singletrack. The brakes were the best part however, just really powerful and easy to modulate. This bike just inspires you to push yourself beyond your limits every time, corner after corner. I'm very pleased indeed!

Nice bunch of pics, and of course the 'Ed looks stunning

Wonder if the B+W pic could be photoshopped so that the fluro green is the only colour??? Might look cool??

you do realize your bike just inspired me to pull out the rockhopper tomorrow and gut it down for paint.

I really really want my single speed xc bike back, and looking at this just told me.... I GOTTA DO IT... AND NOW!

The quest for forks is on!

amazing turn around, would need to ride it to really see if it still feels retro but def looks great top marks again, now get out and ride that muther!

Why would anyone want anything to ride like a clunker. Especially something that has the potential to be up there with the latest and greatest technology. Sure, keeping something completely OEM retro is cool... from a "collector" standpoint... but in all reality... if you use the damn thing... make it ride good. (and yea... you know what I'm talkin about people... hop on 20 year old wheels and tell me your back will feel just as good as when you get off of a pair of 2010 built wheels. Same with forks and many other things. If you want to keep the bike as a collectible and keep its resale keep it stock... if you want it to be a good rideable bike... update it. Not that big of a deal. It's all about the love you put into it... not what others think you should abide by.

love the green btw. Reminds me of my buddies old factory Cheeta issued race bmx frame back in the day. (whatever happened to Cheeta btw? Know they made dh and mtb stuff also for awhile)
