"yea.... you know what I'm talkin about people"
you from the hood fella?
retro does not = clunker but I suspect you just wanted a rant so I'll let you off
Mind and post some pics up of your SS.
No, retro doesn't mean clunker, but things like old forks, old wheels... generally do increase ride harshness. There is absolutely no comparison between new suspension and old. For people like me suffering from major lower back issues, every little bit of gain in ride quality means I can be on the trail all the longer. (reason why I tend to stick to my downhill bike, as even riding my hardtail leaves me hurting).
Nothing against old parts, as many of them are still good, but things like mentioned, wheels etc all help to have newer stuff on. But heck, if you are fine physically and just like to trot around on the bike, by all means. In the end, sure you can still move on an older bike, but it will take more effort, which ='s shorter rides. Kinda what I meant by clunker. Not saying the bikes are useless, but clunker as in feel. (compare a 95 fork to a 2010 fork, and the word that comes to mind is "clunker" IMO.
Anyways this is the only pic I have of my single speeder. And yes... there is a rear der on there... but notice no cable =) Since I train for DH racing on my ss a lot of times it's nice to be able to change gears in 5 min of time and keep going, rather than to pull a cog etc. I can't remember where I got the idea. Think it was a retro lover on MTBR awhile ago. Either way, it is the most brilliant idea for a single speed ever come up with. I reccommend this to anyone with a single speed... as it's WAYYYY more adjustable with less work.
this is the bike I was talking about upgrading after seeing this build up on this thread. I'm going to tig weld a disc brake mount on the back, and throw some adjustable forks up front. Probably adjustable from 100-140mm. Way raked out... (it helps with doing sprint training on flat ground as it keeps the bars as close to the height of my dh bars as possible.
Man the more I look at this thread the more I'm going to go with green. After all, my BBC engine, SBF engine, M50D trans, and 4L80e trans are all that same color... so why not do a bike in the same. (just an idea for people wanting to can paint their frame... engine block paint is the absolute BEST alternative to powder coat. It works similar to epoxy paint but ultra high temp, weather resistent and scratch proof.
