Stolen Bike

Had a one-off GT Zaskar Carbon 4X bike stolen from the apartment where I used to live. It was built up for Dave Wardell and had Hope Team Green everything (including custom brakes, Pro 3 hubs, skewers) which was VERY hard to get hold of at the time (you literally had to be a team rider to have it). The rest of the kit was SRAM X0, Easton EC90/EA90. I bought it from Dave and had only had it for a few months.

The most annoying thing was that I was 99.9% certain that I knew who took it - I actually caught the person eyeing my bike up earlier on in the day and I made a point of making sure that it was securely locked to metal railings in the communal area (I previously had the bike locked on the landing outside my apartment on the top floor, but had been warned not to do so by the lettings agent). Unfortunately, the person in question worked for the clamping company which operated in the private car park, so he had access to bolt cutters which would have made easy work of the locks.

Despite giving all of this information to the police, they would not follow it up (they wouldn't even call around to the person's address to eliminate him from their enquiries). I provided the police with 30+ photos of the bike but was informed that it had been allocated as "unsolved" just a few weeks later.

Here she is the day after I got her. A few bits were changed (namely the forks) but you get the idea. She was a beauty (sorry for the terrible photo!):

Can't believe you would have left that in a communal area, I would have secured it inside my property

We weren't allowed bikes in the flat, otherwise I would have done. I had no choice but to leave it there.

Weren't allowed???

Wise up mate, rules are made to be broken, cycle locks are for gullible mugs, I keep mine in the bedroom at the end of the bed. The missus isn't too pleased but hey ho. :)

You keep a bike lock to tie up the good lady nocturnally in the boudoir?

1992 Kona Kilauea stolen from Plymouth city centre

1994 Kona Lava Dome with Accu Trax, full XT, Red Ritchey ZMax etc. It was bought as frame only from SLS, built up and ridden once in a race at Woodbury. It was stolen the next day from Ralph Colman Cyles in Taunton while I was working. Someone walked through the shop, out the back, got on it and rode off. We knew who it was and he was arrested and charged and ordered to pay me £150 but he chose to spend 30 days in young offenders which meant he didn't need to pay the compensation. Never saw it again :(

Not mine, but in the mid 90s the Plympton (Plymouth) MTB community was scandalized by a bold theft from Plympton Cycles. One of the shop owners had his Pace hanging over the shop floor. A young chap whose, name I forget, took a hammer and walked over to the shop in the dead of night, smashed one of the windows and rode the Pace home. I was there a meet of the Yogi's MTB club in the B&Q car park when the guy arrived on this Pace, exactly the same specs as the missing one, with the exception of the frame which had been painted red. Needless to say, questions were asked about where he bought it from, but he couldn't say anything more than that his gran bought it for him. Shortly thereafter, the police got him and he confessed. The bike went back to its rightful owner, and charges were not pressed.

Dont worry. Were all avid voyeurs here :D

Bad to lose a bike. Especially one such as that . My ti is similar but in red and id contemplate becoming a hermit if it got nicked :?

Im also of the opinion above and my bike comes everywhere. I need a can of coke- Bike comes into the store with me. Not allowed ?? ill find another shop. Same for storage-In the house only. Want to commute? go shopping ? Then build or buy a helfrauds special.

Take the wheels off, then carry it into the flat. Technically speaking and from a legal standpoint it is no longer a bike but a collection of bike parts :?
