Cannondale Beast of the East 1996 Martyn Ashton inspired with a clueless twist

Servicing and cleaning Maguras.
I have never done this before but these things are less mystical than I thought. Pretty straight forward. Ask me again when I’m done though. Cleaning them out, making longer hoses and crossovers. Will be filling them with trial tech fluid in the hopes of making them a tad snappier.

I really think I’m gonna have to go with the red ones. Especially because I prefer the short levers. But will add the neon horseshoes as a respectful nod to the Ashton Original.
And I might not end up using the AZONIC bars… as much as i love them, I have read too much about 30 year old aluminum bars and it‘s got me too timid. So I guess here‘s where this is turning into a restomod?
Please correct me if i‘m overcautious here but if I wanna actually ride it to it’s intended use within the spectrum of my abilities, it seems I should opt for new bars…(?)

Really enjoying this one As much as I've enjoyed some of the faithful replica builds on here, it's nice to see someone doing something a bit different.

Oh thank you! I started out with the intention of making a replica but am more and more embracing the fact that the project is a fluid one and I just try to go with the flow here. Not much use to fight it especially when you don’t know how to row…

Thanks for your kind comments lads! That‘s a bigger motivator than I would have imagined. So I see we‘re here for the scratches. I‘ll try to get some moody close-ups soon…

Airbrush on all the scratches with a fine sanding over afterwards so only the cravices were left filled. It’s lovely running your fingers over it and it‘s super-smooth. Hopefully for thieves it will just look like a beat up bike but I enjoy the history it‘s showing.

So before I’m getting modern bars and Stem, I at least had to dress her up the way she initially wanted to…

Lacking one of the 2 Spacers for the horseshoes (must have lost it) and I don‘t have the aluminum but found a brass-rod in the perfect size. Time will tell if my little homemade spacer will hold up I guess… 0042F599-9D0D-44E7-8F6C-CED10865A615.jpeg

Next up: Does anybody have tips or guidance on cleaning and servicing a grimy rear mech?

We chuck it in the enzyme bath - a local shop might do that for you, otherwise dismantle to the limit of your abilities, soak it all in solvent, dry it out and relube.
