Mate being cheeky?

A. Tell him to pay for it.

B. Tell him if you pay for it he gets no wedding present from you.

C. Wear your suit.

BTW (dont) all turn up in the same Tartan folks will think your the band.
And another thing all Tartans compliment each other so a mix is OK.

Seems a bit cheeky for him to have not been up front about it, but if i were you I'd just be honest with him and tell him you can't afford it. If he really wants you guys wearing kilts he'll pick up the tab

Depends on the friend. Has he been (and will he continue to be) a friend for life? The guy who I've been riding moto/MTB/drinking/carrousing with for the last 35 years wanted the mounts off my old roof rack 2 weeks ago. We agreed on $25. We went riding yesterday. He handed me the money when he got to my place. I had forgotten about it. If I forgot about $25, I certainly wouldn't get bent out of shape over $80 (50 quid).

I was the best man at his wedding. I think I paid for my tux, but wouldn't place a wager on it (I do remember complaining about the emerald green cummerbund/ties. his response was "do you want to marry her?"). I do know under the circumstances (pending son #1) I wouldn't have had an issue with it.

My biggest objection would be wearing a kilt I hadn't been to get properly fitted for. If it's too big you'll look like a tartan shuttlecock, if too small you'll look like a public schoolgirl.

I invested in a made to measure kilt about 20 years ago and it's more than paid for itself several times over.

Hard one.

I picked up the hotel bill for a few unexpected guests the last time I was a best man.

Basically your job is as a fixer, and that includes greasing the wheels to some extent where necessary.

Shouldn't be a planned outlay though.

I have three kilts, hunting, dress and ancient one I don't use, belonged to my great grandfather.

Weddings are the absolute bollox, I love every minute.

:)

If you'd planned(as you would generally) on wearing a suit/your suit then any additioal outlay for clothing requested by the groom should come out of his pocket.
Bridesmaids don't pay for there dresses, well not at my wedding they didn't, so why should you have to payout for 'special' attire? ;)

Or if he's having the reception at a hotel stick all your beer for the evening on his room, should be about £50

i'd object on the grounds that wearing a kilt makes you (anyone) look
a cock
he wants you in fancy dress he pays
