2 tons of car/ woman is a little unfair against a cyclist

TAG-Hauer is owned by a cosmetics firm (I know the former owner as he was also my former boss)

Why you telling us this? Would have been better after any pending court preceedings

I've had a similar incident myself where the car owners thought I was riding their recently stolen bike, they chased me in there car, I was 17 and shit scared...

Putting the violence and verbal abuse to one side, it seems a classic case of a cyclist believing the laws of the road don't apply to him. If you have an accident no matter how trivial you stop.

Brushing a wing mirror isn't an accident. It's less hassle for the driver than getting splashed by a car is in wet weather for a bike. Do you really expect a dozen motorists to stop and apologize to you on a typical rainy night?'

Just put yourself in a car for one moment, all you here a clip, bump, thud from your wing mirror area, you cannot see what damage if any the cyclist has caused.

The guy said that he clipped it and in such a way that he knew there was no damage and no reason to stop. He didn't even say it went out of position, so you've not go no reason to believe the driver couldn't see it and no reason to believe that driver had reason to consider it was damaged. If the guy had hit it hard enough to bend it back while shooting at speed through a tiny gap for no good reason, then yes, that would have been a dumb thing for him to do and he should have stopped, although not a reason for an assualt like this.

But if he had hit a mirror as hard as that then I think it's fair to assume that he would have said so, if only to mention that bruising...

Your version of events assumes that Adi? Aldi? was a wanker; there's no reason to believe that. The difference between a gentle brush and a BANG! that will flip back the mirror is obvious; and it's obvious to the rider and the driver that there is no damage in the first of these.

I'm astounded that members on this forum talk of regularly clipping cars and not bothering to stop on their city commute

Do they? I said that if the guy merely touched it, then it was ok to ride on, but if anyone is regularly clipping cars then they have a problem, and it isn't the cars I'd worry about...

We only have half of this story and a clip of a wing mirror to you might be more and sound a lot more to a motorist sat in traffic. As for bending back the mirror, providing the car and bike were going the same way down the road the bending back of the mirror is a physical impossibility. How you can judge what damage you've done when riding past is absolutely impossible IMHO also.

Dude, stop digging. Yes we only have half of the story, and yes you can choose whether or not to take it on face value. But I do find it a bit grim that you are arguing such points as above. It just seems your trying to justify the occupants of the car assaulting him, making it seem as though he had it coming..

I'm sure most of us at some time or another have clipped a cars mirror during a commute run. I know I have, and have given a little appologetic wave after realising no harm was done. Thankfully it was in parliament square so the police presence probably saved me from a beating. :)

Any way, sort of glad to hear it wasnt in London :)

Exactly.

And of course if you just brush a wing mirror you will know you haven't damaged it. It's a matter of force applied and you can certainly judge that...

Sounds to me like a case of someone saying the first stupid thing that comes into his head and then going on trying to justify himself...

Quite the opposite Jerky after 2 tours of Iraq, 3 of Afghanistan and a tour of Sierra Leone i've seen enough violence to last me a lifetime. What riles me is cyclists who think the rules of road aren't applicable to them. You clip a car you stop, apologise, take a bollocking if necessary after all it was 100% your fault. Don't just ride off, I think it sums up perfectly the stinking attitude that this country has adopted (especially in inner cities I might add) where nobody wishes to take responsibilty for there own actions.

This thread is amazing.

It gets more like STW round here every day, which is a real shame.

he didnt "just ride off" though, he gestured apologetically. i dont know if you mean to but the tone of your posts are coming across like you think he got what he deserved.

Er, just thought I'd follow up my earlier comment after having fired up the lap top and laughed in to my coffee at the fuss it's caused, and reading some of the remarks...

Firstly, I never said the assaulted was a racist, nor did I imply it!

Secondly, I was more intrigued as to why there was no description of the colour of the lady.

Thirdly, I don't even know the skin colour of the original poster.

I just thought the comment was odd is all.

HB, I have nothing to get over thank you.

Apart from my leg this evening, hopefully.

Lastly, if you can bring yourself to do it Adi-66, I think you should post up some pics of your bike in order that people might help with your valuation and to check that things are as bad as they sound and nothing can be salvaged.

P.S. My coffee is very big, strong, and black...

you left out if it is Colombianish in appearence ;)

I'm usually quick with the lingo, but what's STW?

Please read all my posts on this thread, on countless occassions i've stated that I don't condone the violence this man received or the assault he dished out to this woman, albeit in self defence.
