Er, just thought I'd follow up my earlier comment after having fired up the lap top and laughed in to my coffee at the fuss it's caused, and reading some of the remarks...

Firstly, I never said the assaulted was a racist, nor did I imply it!

Secondly, I was more intrigued as to why there was no description of the colour of the lady.

Thirdly, I don't even know the skin colour of the original poster.

I just thought the comment was odd is all.

HB, I have nothing to get over thank you.

Apart from my leg this evening, hopefully.

Lastly, if you can bring yourself to do it Adi-66, I think you should post up some pics of your bike in order that people might help with your valuation and to check that things are as bad as they sound and nothing can be salvaged.

P.S. My coffee is very big, strong, and black...

Really sorry to hear this, having just moved into London and still being in that phase of finding the morning commute a bit of a buzz this tale has had a massive sobering effect on me.

May I ask where abouts it happened, so I know to avoid it if at all possible.

Horrific story, I hope you recover & dont let the event put you off cycling. I also hope the police catch the scumbags.

Just to clarify things a bit, for those of you that are slagging me of for various reasons:

1.
I AM NOT RACIST, in the slightest, my description of the Very Big Very Dark African looking bloke, was a factual ststement... Had i been attached by a Giraffe i would have said "The Animal that attacked me had a long neck and funny spots" wouldnt I ?

It was a term of description. End Of.

2.
The Driver / woman, was of a Afro Caribean / Jamican look, and was rather Large. AGAIN THATS NOT BEING RACIST, or 'FATTIST' in any way, just a description !

3.
The way that the car was parked next to another car was completly illegal... if only i could draw pictures on here, i'd try and explain it.

4.

As the first line of my Original post states, i tried to keep it (the post) brief.
But when i clipped her mirror with my Left hand i did just that CLIPPED it, no damage was done, and the mirror didnt even fold back, let alone scratch, shatter, snap etc.

5.

Upon hitting her mirror i didnt actually say the word 'sorry' but did give a 'sorry wave with my hand' and turn to check the driver had seen me 'apologise'.

6.
I'm White .... or is that a racist comment ? I work in a very diverse LARGE design & engineering facility, and i ABSOLUTLY hate racism of any sort.... there is no place for it in this world, (even when annoyed / hurt etc...) we are all the same inside after all.. PINK.

7.

I was cycling in a urban environment, but it certanly wasnt a rush hour grid locked City road, just a 'normal' suburban main street.

OH AND FINALLY

I didnt 'escape' the car because as she chased me i thought she seemed a little irate, and as two Cyclists have been killed here (Coventry) in recent months, by road raged cars drivers hitting them off their bikes, even mounting the pavement in one instance !! , i decided that probably the safest place to be was on the pavement, as far away from the road as possible so thats where i Hopped up onto.

And as for out running the car... I hopped up on to a section of pavement between two junctions (with no side paths etc) and every time i turned by bike to go the oppoiste way and reached one of the side roads, the car was very close behind me.... and i didnt fancy chancing crossing the road in those circumstances.
I kinda like my Life, Wife & 2 Young Kids ! ! ! ! :D

Please dont judge me on how you read the incident, and the 'you should / shouldnt have' done this, that or the other.

Hindsight is a Wonderful thing !

My original post was not intended to get anyones back's up with the race issue, nor was it put here to let people judge me & my riding style etc. comments fine, Judging me from a few lines of text...NOT fine.

Please remember you guys dont know me, nor where you there at the time.

Putting the violence and verbal abuse to one side, it seems a classic case of a cyclist believing the laws of the road don't apply to him. If you have an accident no matter how trivial you stop.

Brushing a wing mirror isn't an accident. It's less hassle for the driver than getting splashed by a car is in wet weather for a bike. Do you really expect a dozen motorists to stop and apologize to you on a typical rainy night?'

As for the "Why didn't you escape crowd?" - guys, you weren't there, you didn't see the road condition. As weird as it may seem there are circumstances where a car is faster than a bike, and the guy had been rammed by a car then he might be dead right now.

Did you get the car number plate?

That would save a lot of police time?

YES and so did the two people that have come forward as witnesses... but guess whta, the plate doesnt match the car it was on !!!

Just put yourself in a car for one moment, all you here a clip, bump, thud from your wing mirror area, you cannot see what damage if any the cyclist has caused. Modern cars are extremely expensive bits of kit to fix, the smallest of dents can cost over twice that of a GT Xizang to put right even on a little Ford Fiesta.

I'm astounded that members on this forum talk of regularly clipping cars and not bothering to stop on their city commute, no wonder city cyclists have such a tardy reputation and what does this say about your bike skills, not a lot IMHO. I'd of half expected this kind of unaccountable recklessness from an MBUK reading kid but not from experienced and matured retrobikers who should know better.

That is hard lines, man. Sometimes the morning commute can seem like too much hassle, having been cornered by a motorist last year who threatened to kill me. Just got to move on and take care in the future.
