TDF 2016

Re:

Is Froome going to Rio?

Is the road circuit to hilly to tempt Sagan?

Re:

Well I'm confused reading this thread, but perhaps that is because I only started following the TdF a few years ago, so don't remember the great era's of the past.

Now, if I have this right, it is a race, and British guys won more stages than British guys have ever won before, and a British guy won the whole race, for the third time which only eight blokes (excluding that shining beacon of sporting endeavour, Lance the Great) of any nationality have ever done in 103 races... and people here don't like it that this British guy won and don't like it that a British team is better at it than anyone else.

So by that reckoning the England Team from Euro 2016, who lost to a team from a Country smaller than a housing estate in London, must be HERO's.

And let's not get started on that Bl**dy Lewis Hamilton, three World Championships?... What a loser.

Andy Murray? Rubbish.

Without going through the whole thread I think it's only the French participants on the forum who are unhappy with Froomes win, and maybe also the Belgians! Kind of understandable from their perspective.

The thing with Froome and Sky is that they do things so logically and efficiently that it is ruthless. Not very British, who seem to be much better at being plucky losers. And Froome does not have the kind of charisma that shines in the public eye, so it further makes it hard to warm to him.
Personally I am chuffed to bits for Froome and hope he can go on to get five wins. I am also chuffed to bits for Cav and Yates.
I do think there could be changes to how the race is run that would allow for more excitement, but that takes nothing away from those who are best at managing it as it stands. I strongly suspect Froome would be up there even with changes. ;)

For many many years I wasn't fussed about the TdF. I found it entertaining with some memorable epic moments;
it was good to see a return using more off-beat mountain passes and narrower roads to string the peleton out.

I think there needs to be some general admiration for the TdF organisation and riders. The "bad baggage" of
the LA years (and more recent aftermath) plus the reality of increased security challanges requires some
courage to be motivated and keep the event what it is.

Hopefully, we'll have a British winner in a few years as Yates matures

So what is Fr00me... a Martian?
A Kenyan.
His heart is in Africa, for the land, its nature and its people.
He holds a British licence on quid pro quo basis. GB (brailsford) recognised his ability and wanted to work with him, but as GB team director, needed him to 'turn British' (in cycling terms anyway). Froome being the intelligent guy he is, saw this as a shortcut to fulfilling his cycling and earnings potential. Had it not happened, Froome may well be travelling to 2nd rate races with a suitcase and an ex-90's team bike.

But like most people in the UK, as a winner, you'll be happy to claim him as british

Just for the record, I like the guy and am pleased he won

So by your reckoning then pigman, a Brit has yet to win the TdF.
No, Wiggins won in 2012 .... remember him, the guy with the sideburns and scooters who lives in Britain and embraces the culture.

As for Froome, each to their own. I just dont see him as British. Like I said, I celebrate his win and like the guy. If I'm honest, I celebrate it more if I consider him African as it's another corner of the world that is presently under represented in cycling making its mark.

I never considered max sciandri British either, even tho he held a British racing licence.

I am of Polish descent. If I happened to be a great sportsman and the polish federation granted me a meal ticket to success, I may well take it, but reckon as a person, I'd be British, as this is where my life has happened. There is more to belonging somewhere than representing a country with a national jersey.

Sorry guys, I just don't see him as British and like froome more for the fact that he loves the place of his childhood.
