Restoring to admire not ride.

I suppose I don't have a "problem" with garage (or more accurately house) queens, it's just not something I'd ever do. I love seeing bikes being used and I vote on my favorite BOTM based on the looks of the bike, but also the photo taken. If it's on a white background, inside or looks like it came out of a catalog there's less chance I'll vote, even if I like the bike.

I have a near-mint, Wolseley 16-60 grille hanging on my wall.

Was it designed and built to be hung on a wall? Nope.

Would it be better employed on the front of a Wolseley 16-60? Absolutely.

Does it look good, and give me pleasure, on my wall? Damn right.

Ultimately, who really gives a rat's ass?

Within any hobby I've had I've always had somethings that I would use everyday and somethings that are in such good condition and/or valueable that they will never be used but just admired

If anyone has a problem with that then the problem is theirs

And you've never been curious as to how they ride?
You're missing something.

i have no issues with garage queens tbh, but only for uber rare period correct builds.rn

sounds cheesy eh lol :D

Builds? Builds?
Is a bike with it's original componentry, just as it was originally sold, merely a build?
I think I have a bigger problem with bikes being referred to as "builds" than I do with bikes that aren't ridden.

My opinion…there should some consideration to the care and preservation of these old machines (both the exotic and everyday) to allow future generations to appreciate and enjoy the work of the designers and builders.

I don't have a problem, as such, with GQ's so much as the pointless mindset that dictates they not be ridden on the one hand, or not ridden enough on the other...

...my blue Kili Wot is built around an unridden frame, with lots of new or NOS parts, as well as some nice used parts; not everyone's cup of tea, or their idea of a GQ but with the number of bikes I have (all keepers incidentally, not future For Sale threads...) and the amount of riding I do it could quite easily qualify ;)

Not only that but I don't have the slightest inclination to take any of my bikes hundreds of miles by car only to drag them through a bog in torrential rain of Biblical proportions!

I'm 52, not 25!

I did all that when I was young enough to not give a stuff; when you've slept under a hedge for a week at a time on a regular basis it kind of puts things into perspective...

...doesn't mean I'd want to do it now though!

I love my bikes but they are built for my, not everyone elses, approval and enjoyment; there isn't a bike on the Forum I would swap my custom Kili for but I doubt I'll ever enter it in BoTM because not everyone shares my particular points of view where various aspects of our 'hobby' are concerned; it is rarely the 'best looking' bike that wins...

...but that's the one I check the box for every time, irrespective of regularity of use

we need a proper unified definition of Garage Queen Please.............?

Used but only a little...?

NOT USED AT ALL.... NEVER NO WAY...?

Or build a bike to take pretty pictures, only to break to build another to flirt with....?

what is a Garage Queen...?

Does it really matter...?

I can't see why anyone should be frowned upon for collecting / building bikes without riding them.

There are loads of things about vintage "retro" bikes that makes them appealing / collectable and not just the way they ride, sometimes in spite of it.

As for my slant, personally, the only thing I find hard to ride are NOS tyres, I just cant do it

The art in the design of a bike is how it rides. If you don't ride it and admire the 'Art' of it you are missing the point of what good design and Art is. I don't have a huge problem with GQ I just feel sad that they are missing out on the whole point of the bikes they covert.
