But are car boot sales lawful anyway, or are they just allowed because it is believed only minor commerce takes place, not worth the cost pursuing for tax.

Yes they are lawful. And you can earn upto a certain amount without needing to declare to inland revenue too.

Yes you can but you can not buy at auction to sell at a car boot sale every week then go pleading poverty down at t'dol office on signing day

That is called running a business ;)

So MM, I take it you are completely lawful in all your actions, for you would have to be to label others you know nothing of except for the fact that your given example you suppose were fraudsters and therefore criminals. You are self employed I understand, I take it you declare everything that has to be declared and you are 100 % legal on all your other actions. Only you know the answer to that, but if one can accept they have failings in themselves, then they cannot be too hard on others that also display that human frailty of imperfection.

I wonder, do you at any time exceed the road speed limit, or ignore a traffic signal, all things which can be viewed as criminal in nature depending upon what comes after the event.

But to put things into perspective, if human frailty is that of imperfection, then laws created with monetary punishments attached, is a sure fire way of making money for the authorities. Well, it would be if we did not have a judicial system that often accounts for human imperfection, for no one is an automaton. But as we have a court system to judge the accusation, may that continue as we must not go down the route of decisions being made that affect lives, being made by a pen pusher somewhere who deives their income from work done, commission basically.

People who earn money while claiming benefit are fraudulent, end of subject.

Breaking the speed limit is not thieving money from the tax payer now is it :?:

But wearing leather driving gloves and Jaguar ownership is a dreadful crime

Don't try and deny it, I have photographic evidence.

Now off to the Gulag with you Marin Man!

If people can't have a reasonable discussion then I'll just lock it.

I'm a member of 5 car sites, 4 bicycle sites, 4 motorcycle sites, and a few other miscelaneous hobby sites. The only off topic forums I've seen on any of them where political/religious discussions didn't get out of hand were the ones where political/religious discussions were forbidden.

But if you break the speed limit you are committing a crime or are you really saying your crime has a better standing than another person's crime, in which case does that hold up when excess speed kills where the corect speed might not.

In that case robbing the public purse might be one thing, but killing a person through selfish desire is another. Is it you put money before people's lives.

A person committing fraud might not get caught and a person speeding might not kill someone, but the potential exists to get caught and to kill if the laws are broken, that is why they exist, to hopefully prevent death injury, sorrow, upset and loss of freedom in both cases.

But just say for example, all the benefit fraudsters were caught and their benefits stopped, what would happen, get a job when there are no jobs that sustain an existence, get locked away in prison or go on the life of more serious crime. Each and everyone of those cases will end up costing this country money and as to thoughts of no benefit fraudsters whoever they are defined to be, there will be no return of taxation to the public, for it will find other actions to fund, maybe even the result of this misguided policy.

Who knows more money in the government coffers, what will they do with it, any suggestions ?

I have followed this thread and it truly saddens me to see some of the comments made. The sweeping generalisations made are at best ignorant. I thought this was retrobike, not the daily mail

I remember having a similar debate with some friends of friends a few years back. They loved to spout off about what had been fed to them by the right wing press but didn't see the irony when I pointed out how they used an accountant to help them pay as little NI and tax as possible.
