In fairness, we can all go on a free bike ride in the country whenever we want with whoever we want to. I've just got back myself from 60 miles around the Chilterns, and very nice it was too. But that doesn't make any difference to whether I want to go to L'eroica UK or not. Driving my car very fast around the M25 wouldn't be the same as driving it around Brands Hatch either. L'eroica, like it or loathe it, is an 'event', signed routes, stunning countryside, 3,000 other retro-minded cyclists and all the bells and whistles that make up a 3-day cycling holiday. Yes, I feel a bit annoyed that the prices have gone up, but I suppose I must still consider it worth it since I signed up again. You pay your money & takes your choice – Will 3,000 cyclists all be innocent dupes?
For those that criticise the event or criticise those that sign-up, then I would hope they base their criticism on their own direct experience from last year, otherwise, on what basis can they possibly comment on value for money or the events attractiveness etc.
I attended last year, thoroughly enjoyed it but was critical of the camping facilities - this year my camping money goes to a local campsite instead and my 3 days will involve a lot of local business related expenses too.
