Bikes and... wait for it, wait for it, Churches!

^I love those Georgian London churches!
Here's something a little older:

Originally Chepstow priory, now st Mary's Church.
Built late 11th century, belonging to the normans, so this doorway is knocking on 900 years old.

The tower fell down in a storm in 1701, so most of that is, er, comparativey modern.

Today I rode past
Llanfihangel Ystum Llewern...

Surprisingly means st Michael (and the angels) burning the willo'thewisp🤔

Inside, amongst the medieval stonework, memorials, carved timber and stained glass, was a hospitality section, with kettle, teabags, fresh milk...

Seems to be becoming more popular round here - maybe nationwide?
So I had a nice cup of tea,
sitting on a bench in the sunshine,
in the graveyard,
which stands 6 feet above the surrounding land...

- the guide booklet says its because of the several thousand villagers buried here over a thousand years😲

Today I took a bit of a detour from my usual routes to take a closer look at what is definitely one of the oddest looking churches in England...

This is the Church of St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, more commonly just known as the 'Crooked Spire'. The spire dates from the 14th century, and it's apparently not known for sure why it is so twisted and leaning, though there are various theories. I'd say the story about a local blacksmith mis-shodding a hoof of the devil, who leapt over the spire in pain and angrily kicked it out of shape seems most likely. 😄

On first seeing it as I came down the hill into the town it looked for all the world like a hallucination or something.

I also stopped off at a much smaller church on the way back, St Lawrence's Church in the village of Barlow. This one has very much a token effort of a tower. The church has obviously been very patched-up and altered over the years.
