Any recommendations for a vintage frame respray?

So, I have an old Fondriest steel frame (year unknown). It is made of Columbus FMX tubing (a custom set for Fondriest, but likely to be SLX/SPX or TSX) and it has chromed rear stays and head tube lugs.

In fact, the whole frame has been chromed (this was easier than chroming the head tube and the rear stays, apparently). The tubes were then enamelled, but after 30(?) years, the paint is simply falling off (paint doesn't stick to chrome well).

So, I need someone who can renovate the paintjob - preferably a company that has experience of dealing with this kind of thing (masking lugs, painting chrome, looking after old Italian frames) - not the local auto spray shop!

Does anyone have any personal recommendations?

You may need to consider whether the chrome is still good or if the frame needs re-chroming (expensive).

Whilst painting is a skilled job, the expense mainly comes from the number of paint colours you choose for the finish and the complexity of masking requested. Keep it simple if you're on a budget and consider what's right for the frame based on its rarity/ condition/ whether it's a keeper!

You make good points - the chrome is in very good condition (it's 'proper' chrome, from before they banned environmentally-unsound chroming).

The frame is nice, it's also rare, but it's not a Colnago or Merckx, so it's never going to be top dollar.

As it is single colour, maybe I should try painting it myself? Something to think about.

Thanks for all the comments. I've had a look at Argos and Bob Jackson - Argos might be good, but prices are way too much, for what I need (£25 to mask a front mech plate!?!). Single colour, with masked rear end, front mech plate and head lugs, is c£250.

Bob Jackson quoted £170. Both charge extra for sourcing/making transfers/decals.

Bearing in mind that you can buy a vintage Italian frame (albeit not as nice) for £250, I don't think I want to pay that for paint.

Argos is clearly towards the top end, but a pro-paint job is an investment in the frame. They are expensive because they've built a reputation and loyal customers.

I think the quote at £170 is towards the lower end and good value- you could also try Atlantic Boulevard in Bury for a quote. You can easily source decals yourself (Lloyd/eBay etc) when you are ready.

When buying used steel frames you should carefully assess condition and what you're planning for it before negotiating the purchase price!

What would you/the market pay for a Fondriest SPX/TSX with chrome lugs/stays etc in near new condition? That's your price point...but I sense you want to re-spray yourself....just research it fully so you understand what's involved before you finally decide!

The other option is always powder coat at about 50-60. The finish isn’t quite as smooth but it does give a cool look!
