1995 Klein Mantra prototype

Klein prototype with the proprietary rear shock that never saw production. Supposedly only a couple of handfuls made and this may be the only one in public hands?

Wasn't that the coil/elastomer/oil shock that needed a lot of maintainence, but rode fantastically well? No huge surprise they put the Fox on it instead
The paintwork is fab on those too

It always makes me smile when manufacturers mount fragile shock workings right in the firing line of the rear tyre!!

there should be a rubber cover on the damper to seal it off.

There was a magazine article (MTB Pro....MBUK.....?) showing you how to make shock boots out of and old inner tube and zip ties

yeah, might be an inner tube. other prototypes had a more evolved cover though

Yep, the boot was missing when I got the frame. Not much chance of finding one those laying about!
