why dont retro bikes work when you really need them ?

got a raleigh m400 which as served well taking me to work so i take it off road for fist time to hanchurch woods get so far the cassette spline wont play ball end up doing cyclocross and carrying it uphill ,knowing something was going to happen i took a modern bike and ending up on that :cry:
when i got it home manged took fix the cassette spline : :eek:
better luck nexet time
 
people if you are viewing this im not slagging of retro bikes
ive bean on a few and had a great time even with the breakdowns
just letting off steam i was really looking forward to taking it off road and it manged to just get across it :LOL:

Although usually it's a case of "piss poor preparation equals piss poor performance" - you can hardly blame the poor bike, it's just a machine that needs a little regular preventative maintenance.
 
When you say the cassette spline failed, do you mean that the freehub wasn't engaging so the cassette freewheeled in both directions...?

If so it sounds like frozen water in the freehub body sticking the ratchet pawls down.
Quite a common problem when it gets below freezing and not just on old hubs.

I've stripped and rebuilt about a dozen hubs for various people since it got cold. In one hub I literally poured dirty brown/orange water out of it, so it's no surprise that it was causing problems.

i fixed the spline when i got home yes freehub
just moaning because been dying to take it off road
ps the wheel is really old so my fault for not checking it
been in the garage for years
the ratchet pawls werent playing ball
