Unknown retro bike unknown year - Bullmoose bars, Klunker build

By those standards, Charlie wasn't klunkingView attachment 650589
Note the curved fork and drum brakes.

Alan Bonds provides all the information on the traditional style here

The examples provided are spectacular as well, and show how varied the bikes used in this era actually were. There was no set of rules, everyone was trying their ideas as the sport evolved
Klunkin....it's a state of mind !

Okay, maybe not the straight forks then, but you know what I mean!

There's definitely a wide variety of examples of those bikes, and a ton of differences between them (necessity and innovation demanded both), but there's still an even bigger difference between a Klunker and an early MTB/ATB. Stylistically speaking and functionality-wise, anyway.

Or at least I think there is?

I wouldn't call anything a Klunker that didn't have heavy Klunker vibes and choices.

I mean, a Trailmaster isn't a Klunker, and that's one of the first ever MTB-specfic bikes.

Only the early Breezers probably have enough of a cross-over aesthetic to warrant the same terminology, and even then I would say they were early MTBs. As I think most would?

Anyway, enough of the thread hijack. I'll bow my head, and slow my typing.

I was just agreeing with someone else anyway! ;)

Isn't the fact of the matter that people rode what they had, modded it in any way they could, broke a few limbs and then we all sit here now labeling things instead of riding because the back hurts and the shed is too full, selecting a bike is a chore and polishing a good stiff crank is a bit nicer than braving the muddy great beyond
