Top Gear finally gets its comeuppance

Gentlemen, if I could just chime in here...

My lament was that the entire country has forgotten how to be 'doers'.

Have you noticed in the last decade, how our elected leaders (with a mandate from the people) spent their time "calling upon" other people to do something? Tony Blair would "call upon" the unions not to strike or Gordon Brown would "call upon" industry to be more innovative?

These guys were supposed to be leaders. They were supposed to lead the way. We wanted them to say "Right, this is the direction in which we're going to go", plot a course of action and then implement it with a bit of public money and some shouting.

But, no. Just like "Doing", "Leading" involves picking a course of action and committing to it. And no one seems to have the balls to do that anymore.

And part of the reason for this is that we have a whole new breed of pub experts who write newspaper columns or appear on TV programmes and do nothing but sneer at anybody who sticks their neck out and tries to improve the world. And a prime example is Jeremy Clarkson.

On the one hand Clarkson weeps his crocodile tears at the lack of British innovation and the lack of any modern-day Brunels -- but as soon as anyone sticks their head above the parapet and says "Okay, I'm going to try to make something innovative and different", he's there with his sneering sarcasm.

Any examples of his sneering towards anyone or any company in particular?

Well, I've already referred to his treatment of Rover when the company was on its last legs, but I think that watching any episode of TG will provide a treasure trove of sarcastically snide jibes at other people's work.

Indeed, along with a praising of many others, no doubt. Has been a while since I watched TG, but Clarkson et al certainly loathed later Rovers - and with good reason: they were just not as good as other cars out there, so why stick up for a brand that wasn't performing? Just because it was British?
