I think there are a lot of confused responses to the original question. We're talking about bike designs and someone mentioned dia compe headsets :?:

In terms of bike designs, here's my list:

1981 - Specialized Stumpjumper. Tim Neenan design. Asian made frames based on custom designs to get people on the "trails" for less money. Take a successful design and make it more accessible to the masses.

1979 - Kelly/Fisher MountainBikes. Tom Ritchey design. The first production mountain bike.
etc, etc...

I fear there is still some confusion the question was all time greatest bike designs, not all time greatest mountain bike designs.

But it will be difficult to pull this thread back on topic now.

This thread is really problematical, less so than the STW one. Original stw thread was all bikes but so many have gone mtb route only. Stw in particular has split according to which mtb tribe they belong to.

All bike top ten(not in order):
Safety bike - the bike as we know it
Penny farthing - gave us good spoked wheels
Burrows lotus tt bike - aerodynamics become major influence
For hire city bikes - a la boris bikes, reinventing bike journeys for citylife
Bromptons - bikes joined up with fast long distance transport
Pace Rc100 - first time all in one place modern bits (cranks and aheadsets) and geometry borrowed by most major players and claimed as their own (confess to being a square head here)
Klunkers/trackers - forerunners of mtbs
First carbon framed machine - ?
First full susser that brings full sus as an affordable concept to the masses- Marin Mt Vision?
First bmx

If it's about bike designs then why is it in the retro mtb section?? If in the retro mtb section then we are talking mtb???

is that mine tony ?

the thing with KB and to some extent tom ritchey is that they made stealth developments to mtb's ,still are ,on the surface a bit boring ,safe even , then when you look at thier stuff ,its good ,very good ,and works

as for game changing bike designs

alpine stars eos frames
boulder gazzelle was the one for me
GT triple triangle bikes ,all ride so well ,gimmick my arse
san an ,a lasting design and forerunner of most good single pivot frames
GT rts yup first of the good mass produced boingy bikes
GT lts and its sts variants , if you've ridden one you'll know why
a design only killed by specialized and its patenf enforcements
paces , love them for their design ethos ,works of art too the ride is another thing
cunningham mantis just hubba hubba ,no more to say
titan half track ,pre-cursor to the e-stay revolution and a bloody nice bike too
finally
brent trimbles inverse 4
just because

just maybe , D/B's lovely topanga , as its the first really good mtb i rode
it was such a revelation over the maurauder and giant coldrock i'd previously ridden (and enjoyed)

Without wanting to repeat what's already been mentioned, I would like to add.

Principia

By 1996, the first tapered steerer design and a super-light alloy frame that was actually nice to ride.

IMO Francesco Quinn' early prototypes revolutionized the MTB genre by proving that you didn't need a double diamond frame.

The Quinn bikes really started that whole era of alternative frame designs.
Without the Quinns (and their offspring, the Sbikes), the Trek Y, C'Dale Raven etc probably wouldn't exist now. Every MTB would still have the same boring layout.
Most of them still do. I wonder why? ;)
