Today's Ride

It's been stinking hot here the last few days so had to wait until 5pm when a slight breeze cooled things down a bit. Just wanted to do a short ride on the Salsa to try out some new tyres, but found the front derailleur out of whack -- storage alongside a bunch of other bikes might have caused a knock or something. Anyway, was all kitted up and keen, so came home and swapped over to the Soma and took off again.

Nice ride in the sunshine, but was concerned to find a gate -- no fence -- has been installed across the dirt road leading to the 'badlands' where a few of us ride our MTBs. It was easy to circumvent today, but the intention is clear.

Further down into the bush, I came across something interesting -- an Aboriginal Yarning Circle. The local people, the Yuin, were driven out of the area or died in the 19th Century, so it's intriguing as to what's gone on there.

I can imagine this place being, if not sacred in some way, then a very pleasant location for spending some time with the family -- the little creek is rushy and peaceful, despite the devastation of commercial logging on the higher ground all around. I've seen a platypus here before and today startled a couple of roos enjoying the shade.

Heading back out of the area, I attempted a few jumps on a hummocky downhill and was rewarded with a minor and graceless spill. Don't worry though -- the bike's fine.

If your law is anything like ours in the uk (🤔😉) then the 1st thing a landowner needs to do is deny access, or else you might have established a historical right to use the land.
If this route matters to you, it might be worth getting some advice. 🤞

When you come across attempts like this to stop people using established tracks I find it best to get over the obstacle and continue along it quickly whilst shouting “get orf my land”!

It’s probably more to stop vehicles than walkers/cyclists? I do see this quite often here in the UK. Round our way it’s usually to stop hare/deer coursers getting through, though they seem quite happy to wrap a gate around the post.

I think the land may belong to the local authority -- there are signs that they are going to do something with it soon, probably plant it with evergreens. Some of the established trails near Canberra are on this kind of land, so there's a precedent.

Might be worth suggesting to the local authority that they put in some cycle access and routes to keep the local population healthy, and some quieter areas for the kangaroos and platypusses to chill😃?

IMG_5414.jpeg IMG_5415.jpeg Had managed to post Fridays ride in bikes and bridges by mistake!

Yucky weather, mist and general lack of sunshine put the dampener on photos today. Still got a good ride in just had the permeating fine rain mist most of the time.

Unusual church tower at Clopton (I think) then coffee/breakfast stop at the Watch Office at former RAF Alconbury.

I've been riding modern bikes almost exclusively this year so I decided to take the old Stumpy out for a blast today. It took a while to get used to it again but I had that old hand-in-glove feel back by the end. The 29er I've been trying out is undoubtedly more capable on the tame local trails — in almost every respect except generating enjoyment.

The Kuwa is getting a lot of outings at the moment, at least when it its not raining. Cloudy day today, but a bit warmer (10C and not too windy)

I got a little video of a large herd of deer parting in front of me on the track - but don't seem to be able to upload it. Nevermind.

Got to the park relatively early (for a Sunday) which is preferable to trying to ride around it when the hordes descend around 10am 😆
