tesco questionable marketing

we will all work for tesco one day

You know what, I've said this for years and people laughed.

I remember the single incident that stopped me going to Tescos - was away for a weekend, on our way there stopped in Tescos Cambridge I think, just to get a sarnie. I was so disgusted with their monopoly I had to leave, the store is sooooooooo vast and trying to sell EVERYTHING I just refused to buy into it. The bloody place was on two floors, upstairs was all the electrical and I don't mean Panafonics and Sorny, it was all the real deal.

As someone that had recently set up as self employed I found Tescos was the equivalent of hell.

I live in St Albans and we have a market two days a week, I get all my fruit and veg there, it's not ony cheaper, it's better and lasts longer.
Same with the butchers, use the local guy who just won retailer of the year. Same story, cheaper, organic and so much better that guests have commented on what we've bought there before I've told them anything.

It's not all roses here though, the council are useless and the independent shops are slowly going. Weve been fighting a Tescos planning for about 15 years and they A/ refuse to give up and **** off and B/ refuse to sell on the buildings that are on the site, have been boarded up for years now and just decaying. They really are just full of dirty tricks IMO.

Thank god I am an artist for a living, Tescos cant start suppyling MY artwork at 4.99.

Local shops/businesses/pleasant community life - use em or lose em folks.

So for those of us that work 8am-6pm fulltime, where do you suggest we buy our food?

that is a very good point and is my failing too. its also why i use halfords rather than my local shop.

You'll have to make arrangements, and get your priorities right.
It's harder if you work office hours, but worth it. In Reading there's a organic food co-op that operates at a different place every weeknight, and there's box schemes.

I think you're lazy and ignorant if you're aware of the problems with the current way the nation buys food and don't do anything because you have a job. Lots of other people have jobs too, that doesn't stop them buying organic.

I never said that I had anything against people that shop at supermarkets so wind your neck in ;)

There will always be exceptions and if you cannot shop anywhere else due to your job, or just don't want to, that's no business of mine I'm I'm not in the habit of telling anyone what to do anyway.

My problem is with the supermarkets themsleves, they are not happy to specialise in something like food and groceries, nope they want it all. Banking, loans, car insurance, mortgages, electrical, they see a day when you go into one shop and get everything. Well I personally don't want to see that day. The fact is, the majority of the public, myself included on occasion, are lazy and will not realise what they had until it is gone.
I don't know what you do for a living, but maybe it's one of those jobs that is not affected by the surge of the supermarkets? I honestly hope so.

All the best

Ben :)

Nope, my job isn't affected by the rise of the supermarkets and neither is the OH's... However, I work long hours usually and so does she. I only have a half-hour break in the day, and she works in the middle of nowhere so shopping during the day isn't possible. We both have horses which consumes an extraordinary amount of time, both in the evenings and at weekends. Neither of us has the time to go to 5 or 6 shops to buy what we can in one half-hour trip to a supermarket. Our lifestyle also dictates that we can't buy too much fresh food either as we never know when we'll be in the house from one day to the next.

Yes, if this were 20 years ago and she wasn't working then I'm sure she'd be shopping at markets and independent shops during the daytime but society has changed since those days.

Whether you like it or not, supermarkets are fulfilling a requirement that obviously existed or their growth wouldn't have happened. Blame the change in roles and priorities within society if you like, but if people choose to use supermarkets over independent shops and the like then there's a reason behind it. If I had a successful business that could diversify and grow into other sectors I'd be doing it - wouldn't you? Market forces at work again... ;)

I'm right out of this argument right away because it's getting too personal, but I don't consider that an appropriate comment to put on a public forum.

I love this!

Since when has reading the Gaurdian become some sort of problem?

I read the morning Star,I am a Socialist, I also read the Gaurdian.

Scarlett i think you better cool it. This is not a personal attack on you or anyone else but just an airing of peoples viewpoints.

If can't offer anything constructive then i don't think your imput is needed.

Al, keep smiling!! :D
