Stuck Seat Post - Slide Hammer Loan Request.

So no pictures of the state the seatpost is in? You could maybe put a heat resistant cloth and then use a blow torch, don’t worry, the torch wont melt the aluminium.

If you don't mind destroying the seatpost. Put the post in a big vice and use the frame as a lever.

The post is a write off already. The previous owner has smacked the crap out of it downwards so I'm trying not to damage the seat tube. It's a very long seat post and is just about down the tube to the bottle cage mounts. It has about 4-5" of seat post sticking out of the frame and is already missing the clamp. Fluffychicken has drilled a hole through the seat post and tried to shift it with a bar but it won't move, hence my using plus gas for a week or so. Iv'e removed seat posts before but all from steel frames. All with success. I'm just veeeeery wary of damaging not only an aluninium frame but a Pace frame as well hehe

There is no down, well maybe a few mm. Just under it is an internal butting it would ram against. You can feel it (as well as to measure how far in it is) with a spoke, they're great for all sorts.

It's had a heat gun over the top area and Junctions, not helped it shift (but don't tell Trebz that keep it quiet 🤫 )..
Many to get some penetrant to seep in (and shock it at the same time)..

Is has been attempted to hammer rotate it after that, so 12mm or so bar through the holes in the seatpost, and a thump hammer, and keeping the frame rigid.

Hit hard, rapid shape shocks etc, levered but not to the point the frame may give (it is a Pace and they do crack).

So it is an arse.

A thick Syncros Alu post stuck deep into a thin Alu pace frame, metal keyhole saw, or them hacksaw blades with handle at one side.
Or if there are any cool and stylish Japanese saws to use, that would be cool.

I'm not allowed to try NaOH in a bit of boiling water... 😂
(just for shits and giggles)

Yes, putting the post in the bike clamp and using the headtube as a lever to turn it is a good idea. Do this:

Get the bike into a warm room and heat up the frame with a hairdryer so that it’s warm to the touch. If the post is a write off chop of the very top of the post. Put some water in your freezer to turn it into ice, once turned into ice, crush it and mix it with equally cold water to make it into a slush make sure it is very cold. Pour in the slush into the hole in the seatpost, make sure it fills the tube, after about 4/5 minutes the seatpost should contract and use the hole fluffy chicken drilled in the side to lever the seatpost to the side to turn it if it’s turning just twist it out. If not get some hydrogen spray of the internet and repeat, that should do it. If that still doesn’t do it, make a jig and drill the seatpost out.

I had a Santa Cruz Heckler (aluminum) with a stuck Titec post (aluminum). That was the worst stuck post I have ever had to deal with. I used a torch to heat the seatpost, not the frame, and a bucket with ice water to quickly cool the seatpost. I cycled between very hot and very cold multiple times for about 15 to 20 minutes to break the bond between the frame and post, then clamped the post and twisted the frame. This was after about a week of trying everything else.

I’ve sawn a few stuck posts out using the lengthways slit method when all else has failed. This method really does rely on patience/skill (in my case that means accuracy is more likely!). I set the frame up at a height I could work at while sat down and did a bit every night, it really isn’t a fun task. Sometimes you have to saw/peel a bit more, keep adding some sort of penetrant and eventually it comes out. Something like this lets you use the whole length of the blade. I was tempted to use a metal blade in my reciprocating saw but soon realised that method was quick but very risky for the frame!

*edit - if you’re patient/accurate it’s probably the lowest impact on a delicate frame option

I used this tool to cut a seat post out of my Saracen Race Elite. Took me three weeks of slow sawing with Plus Gas to get it out :)
