Stuck headset cup, removal woes, idiot needs help!

I always use the large screwdriver/lump hammer method myself, supporting the frame in the angle of the headtube/downtube(headtube/top tube) with a suitable chunk of off-cut 4x2...

Is it possible that there's no "lip" for the tool to engage on? Some headtubes are butted in this way, or have such a thick wall, that there's nothing for the tool to engage with. If there's only the smallest bit of cup overhanging and the proper tool won't work, I'd go with the old steel handlebar approach and tap around.

sounds obvious when you say it out loud but make sure the frame is really secure before you kertwat it. if it moves it dissipates the force of the blow

if a headset is being taken out and not being re-used then a special tool or delicacy is not needed...i've used plumbing white pvc pipe, bits of wood, long flat blades..anything really

I doubt the tool is the problem. Icetoolz make some reasonable tools. I have one and it works very well. Using the other method takes more time. Using the deciated tool and a few shap wacks and out the cups will pop.

Have you a 1 1/4" steerer as the icetoolz tool only works with headsets for 1" and 1 1/8" steerers.

your splined tool

hi, your tool looks like it might have a piece missing - the prongs are quite thick metal so it looks like they wont spring out without help. I have used things like this b4 and they have a V shaped wedge that you you put in once the tool is in place... you'll need to give it a sharp hit with a hammer, if its really stuck and you despirately need it out you could try heating the head tube - you would obv burn the paint thus leaving the frame needing a respray?? hope you get it done - things like this make me scream :(

It's a 1" steerer, it's just not opening out properly.

Dont apologise all help appreciated.

I have it soaking in penetrating oil to help out, should give it a try Tue or Wed and report back.

lts just one of those jobs where brute force is the only answer. l remember the first time l removed one, it took me ages because l was afraid to really twat it. But some valid points here, Always best off when the frame is well supported either on a bench with a foam gardeners pad under the frame to avoid dents or scratches or in a bike stand clamped by the seat post with a colleague supporting the frame. Oh and don't miss with the hammer ;)
