Stuck headset cup, removal woes, idiot needs help!

For removing cups and fitting crown races I have only ever used another person (usually me) to hold the frame or forks whilst another trustworthy person does the hitting - in essence I could claim the gf fitted the crown race for the airborne

I rather suspect using this tool, or one like it, you're going to have to hit it harder anyway because the force is directed around the whole of the flange (that's a nice woody word...sorry  ) whereas if you use a 1/2" bladed screwdriver you're going to gradually break the seal with less force as you work your way round it?

Christ l wouldn't let my other half have a hammer anywhere near my bikes!

Using as screwdriver will more than likely damage the cups if they are really stuck. The point of the tool is the force is evenly distributed around the cup causing less damage and to save those fingers from hammer blows!

I'm 51-years-old next month, I've been using this method ever since I've been faffing around with bikes and I've yet to damage a headset cup, be it steel or alloy... ;)

Well I managed to damage an alloy cup once. Also I have twatted my fingers with the screwdriver method. It was a very stuck headset though. It does work though.

Using the other method takes more time.

i beg to differ - chain reaction cycles were next day delivery... i had a hammer in the tool box. rough estimation was using the hammer / wood method saved me 26 1/2 hours if the postman arrived at his usual time.

So tried for half an hour yesterday.

One man holding the frame on a piece of wood, me hitting a screwdriver as hard as I can to move headset cups out.

Didnt budge at all.

This is after extensive penetrating oil soaking.

Other options?

Assume then cut out and collapse in on itself as with stuck seatpost.

Or put cups in vice and pull out?

I really think a lump hammer, the correct tool, a trustworthy assistant and some brut force is the way to go ... ;-)

If they are that stuck puting in a vice and pulling will not help. The correct tool and a hammer as already suggested.
