.... or is it as much of a faff as I made it? Left cable was ok but the right was a real pain to fit. Kept unwinding the cable and wouldn't behave and simply just fit through the hole and follow the guide around the shifter and out to the adjuster.

Got there in the end after many minutes of frustration. I can't help but think it is more complicated than it should be and that the shimano approach is way easier.

There's some SRAM shifters where you have to removed the top cap off the shifter to remove/fit a cable. They're are a proper headache! Friend of mine destroyed a set trying to change a cable. Bent the springs inside, mixed up washers, you name it.

That's the ones. You can take the spring off to save damaging it but the run for the cable requires you to push it through some tiny plastic hole and on the other side the cable is supposed to bend round a curve, which it would not.eventually got it through after various attempts, the cable shredding each time until success. Luckily there was enough cable left to run to the rear. Oddly the front mech was easier to do?

A bit of a crappy design for rh shifter x0, so easy to damage, seem to recall getting cable around the cam being tricky especially if cable has been cut .

Definitely this.

Also, I think Grip Shifters take 1.1mm cables (as opposed to 1.2mm).
