I have a Mountainbike Action magazine somewhere with some pictures - it was a 29" special feature

These pics are from 1999, September edition. It's a 700c Willits bike, custom made.

So after a good fettling, new old saddle and ridiculously cheap wheels I now have a totally 80's gravel bike..... perhaps I should add
a flexstem for authenticity???think I may have to spray the girvin white tho'. If anyone's interested the wheels are super slick 105 hubs on Mavic Reflex eyeletted rims with dt spokes and white challenge griffo world champ tyres for 35 Elizabeth's!!!!

But I take the opportunity to 'harvest' some kudo's
The only bike I should never have sold.

Love that colourway. I wouldn't change the stem - those dirt drop stem are perfect period gravel spec. Wonder how it would look with purple gravel kings....

Miyata called theirs Triplecross/alumicross to reflect the nearness to cyclocross. Personally I think my triplecross would have been too heavy to race.

Finally after years, it was time to give my giant tourer hybrid bike better wheels , better and hubs and a whole transmission upgrade. I chose mavic A719 rims which are some of the best rims for gravel bikes, some xt 780t hubs that I had in spare, xt 780t and xt 780m transmission plus xt 8000 pedals. The result is vas improvement over altus transmission and the original wheels , the xt 780t v brakes are much more performing than the altus cantilevers . Testrode it in heavy rain and it handles , brakes and shifts extremely well. Its relaxed geometry is ideal for long hauls

This one’s a bit of a mashup, so thought it might belong here: home made ‘Callisto’ based on a surprisingly sweet 531CS British Eagle tourer frame from the mid 80s. Kooky Modolo rocky cantis are intriguing; mix of XT and suntour for forward progress. 23lb & pretty nippy.

First decent bit of weather, so tried out new gears on the Callisto. Despite a deep love of old friction Suntour derailleurs, I’ve switched to an 18sp Shimano index setup with 105 levers on the stem, and a hyperglide rear freewheel. Immaculate comfortable shifting, though I’ve got a few reservations over the amount of metal work round the headset area (Edward Scissorhand vibes!)
