shimano axle cones

how interchangeable are the cones for a shimano rear axle? I've got an M755 rear axle that's about given up the ghost (bearings and cones are pitted), however, the availability of spare cones seems pretty scarce now. Is it feasable to use a more readily available (more modern) cone with the standard spacers, etc from my M755 axle?
