Pleasant unexpected find - 1990 Zolatone Team Marin

Nice job Tim. Proves what you can do with a bit of patience and plenty of elbow grease :)

Send Wookie a pm, he got his forks, stem and bars refinished quite reasonably on his, with very nice colour, finish etc

This is worth having the bars right, it's a very nice bike

Thanks for that buddy, funnily enough I was browsing his 1991 Marin Team rebuild last night ;) Stunning bike!

Re:

Bar extensions involve putting a shim in the end of the bar and welding some tubing on the end to restore the original width... saw it once on a klein thread (not sure but might've been kleinspainted.com)

As for repowdering new bars, you'd be very lucky to get an exact match mate, i sent my bars forks and stem to the same place as Doug when i restored a 91 Team and i wasn't happy with the result.... I still have the original bars but they're narrower than yours!!!!

Thanks for the info re widening. Ideall I'd have that done and the joint would fall well under the grips but unfortunately the mounting of shifters further in has left chips and scratches where they would show if lengthened.
I'm going to check with a paint body shop I've used for my cars and various bike parts and see what they recommend. If they can get a good enough colour match I'll get a pair of alloy bars painted up.

Re:

it was all the rage in the early 90's to sport narrow bars, I trimmed mine down quite a bit at one point.

nice bike, i'd be inclined to swap the front and rear cantilevers round, get a bit of heel clearance on the rear.

I'm thinking of trying to get hold of a pair of the XT M732's for the front as well, guess that's what it had from new, no idea why the front was changed out.
I haven't had an issue with heel rub as yet but it's only been out for a couple of short rides so far.

Hey SLIM, thanks for that. I had thought that something like this may be available but hadn't looked into it yet. The allo bars on the Marin have a much thicker wall than I've seen before so I'll have a look into this. I'd rather use the original bar but it may not be an option.

I have an alloy bar coming thanks to Muddy Paw that I could have painted if I can find the right paint or I have a pair of lovely ano purple Answer Hyperlites on the way also.
