Missy Giove arrested on pot charges

She should've retired to the Netherlands with their drug's policy...but it's probably too flat for a downhill biker!

These amounts are illegal even in the Netherlands
Personally I think all kind of drugs should be legal, just collect the taxes for some xtra heath care and get the criminals out of the scene..... but hey, I'm Dutch ;)
just for the record I've NEVER used (or will use) any drugs apart from Coffee, Tea and my occasional Beer/Whisky

chances are criminals would still find their niche in the scene with underage users, and offering cheaper stuff, undercutting legitimate sellers.

I always thought she was just nasty. There were very few pro riders back in the day that single handidly turned me off of their sponsor's gear, but she was one of them. That whole dead fish around her neck thing... way too much effort spent on trying to be different, rather than just being better.

Sad? yes. Am I surprised?....nah.

Hmmm, maybe she was different, and not "trying to be", some of us are different, and it's not to try to convince others of our difference. I found her to be genuine, and yes, "different". In fact, an good athlete that trademarks themself via their personality or look, will garner more sponsorhsip deals- it isn't all about being the best.

Does one buy nikes because Michael Jordan wears them and is sponsored? I don't but many do. Flipside, if I enjoy GT bikes, will I stop buying them because Missy uses them and is sponsored. I wouldn't, but you would. I've always been under the impression that riding or using something because of the spokesperson is be bit toolish, I would think that stopping use of something solely for the spokesperson is the same.

meh, to each his own.

I would like to hear missy's side of the story.

Nah...if a manufacturer sponsors an ass, and certainly when there are equal quality alternative products to use instead, I'd not shy away from avoiding that manufacture's product. I'd wager that all of us feel the same way, including you, on some level. If Yeti tested their bikes on puppies and kittens for no reason, then you'd probably avoid Yetis....most people would. To me, watching Giove talk in interviews was as painful as watching somebody torture a cat...and yeah, that tainted my attitude toward Yeti when it came to making purchases.

dude, testing on puppies and kittens has nothing to do with sponsorship of a spokesperson. Your argument would've been better made with the following:

if a company uses person "MJ" to sponsor their product, let's call it a soda, and MJ decides to molest children, then yes, perhaps I would be tempted to stop drinking that soda, if the product continues to sponsor that child molesting animal.

I'd first white a letter/email asking that the perv be dropped from their ads. Then, yes, I would stop using their product to make a point, no matter how good it is.

Missy is no child molester, so your opinion and subsequent action is/were a bit extreme.

Maybe John Tomac is a hashish-hippie also?

That would be groundbreaking, wonder if Oakley would want their solid gold watch back from him then?

What about Greg Herbold? In retroperspective he seems a bit weird (likes colors well after purple went uncool and used uncool stuff such as bar ends on riserbars and glasses instead of contact lenses incl Bula gear).

A wild guess is that he has got his attic packed with other stuff than Ringle protos :?:

Reefer Madness is hilarious! A gratuitous excuse just to show titillating, 'shocking' behaviour. :D

If it's domestically grown then there might be a moral argument for legalising it but what about imported stuff; there's some nasty bast'rds involved, not to mention the impoverished folk who are dependant and exploited along the way. Simply legalising it is immoral if only because it endorses the criminal practices beginning in the producer country. It's just out-of-sight,-out-of-mind selfishness, I reckon.
-Everyone who's into the idea ignores this, or assumes that it'll be 'home' grown and controlled, but that's bull -there'll always be 'imports'. I don't see much home produced hash for example.

I think you underestimate the marketing engine. A consumer could (and does...all the time) disregard a brand based on whim or personal reaction or fuzzy feelings and hairs on the backs of their necks...like me...and never be the worse off for it....like me. Could be an aversion to a brand caused by the extreme, like your example of child molestation by a figure central to an add campaign. Could be a pretty mild aversion, like being irritated by the Taco Bell Chihuahua or the Quizno's Hampster and chosing to eat someplace else.

Yeti never appealed to me. Not because they made crap...but rather beause they perpetuated a team image that I thought was a little stupid. Giove was a central character to that image. That's it.

Did I miss out on the best and only option in quality aluminum mountain bikes by passing on that ARC and buying a Rascal instead? Was I really putting myself at a disadvantage by not buying into Yeti's hard-core box-van image? Like I said...nah.

It's not like I hated Jordan to the point that I gave up shoes, or the Chihuahua so much that I gave up tacos...or even that I disliked Giove to the point that I gave up bikes. I just chose to buy something else.

C'mon man...Missy Giove would be the first person to own up to the idea that she was a polarizing figure back in the day. People loved her or they hated her. I just didn't feel the love.
