I dont think this will pass :? but it will force a vote of no confidence in the leadership and force a general election.
Get ready for labour returning to power ;)

So, if it is not really about saving money what could it be ?
It's about trying something, anything, other than just shrugging our shoulders and accepting that some people are going to spend the rest of their lives living on state benefits and watching daytime TV. The country cannot change direction by staying on the same course. This government is trying to solve the problem. They might make some mistakes, they might have to alter the plans as they go, but they're trying something.

To hear the lefties in this thread squawking about wasting money is just about as ironic as it gets. If we went to my birthplace of Middlesbrough, I could give you a guided tour of the arts projects, the NHS projects, the civil service projects and the infrastructure projects that Labour has poured mind-blowing sums of tax-payer money into -- all under the auspices of "investing in growth and jobs".

And what has resulted from this colossal spending spree? The square root of f**k all, that's what.

The borough of Middlehaven in the Labour stronghold of Middlesbrough has the shortest life expectancy in England (57 years). Middlesbrough in general has one of the worst unemployment levels, one of the worst drug problems (coupled with high levels of teenage prostitution to pay for those drugs) and one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the country. My hometown is a place of unending despair. The oldest employer in the region, Corus Steel has -- under a Labour government -- just shut its doors with the loss of 1,600 jobs.

I suspect that RBers who live in other places that have been voting Labour since Adam was a boy could tell similar stories.

There have been arguments in this thread that there is some kind of conspiracy against the working class by toffs in top hats. It's bollocks.

If you want to see a conspiracy against the working class, keep your eyes on the socialist intellectuals of the Labour party who in some misguided act of charity keep generations of families conditioned to the easy money and absence of routine that comes from living off state handouts, while taxing the crap out of the small and medium sized businesses that could offer those working class people the chance of employment -- and all of the feelings of dignity, worth and participation that employment brings.

As it stands, those human beings who watch the clock go round day in, day out lead a life that's little better than that of a house plant. It may be that this plan to give unemployed people a taster of a working life is exactly what some of them need to feel human again.

IMO John all the projects you mention are a better way of trying to find people work. How is taking people's benifit off them if they don't find a job going to work in a place like Middlesborough where there are no jobs?

I'm sure the 1600 workers you mention would prefer to have a chance of finding work rather then have no chance and then have their benifit taken off them for the privilege?

Makes it sound like a choice rather than a command :?

OK so they do some work for which they wont be paid but get to keep their pittance
What about the expenses from going to this 'voluntary' job? bus fares, lunch etc.
Are they going to help with these costs :?

Nope.

I think people stand a better chance of obtaining work and staying in that work when they have hope and belief, but when you have employers who pay the absolute least yet demand the most and a government that squeezes the pips out of everything in taxation, hope and belief just seems to dwindle away

Inspiration and safeguards is the way to go not threats and punishment

Now the changes that are coming say they are providing those safe guards, but if safeguards are in place i.e. the keeping of benefits until pay rises, you will notice they are referring to increases in hours not increases in pay award, what is to stop an employer paying peanuts for long hours of work indefinately bearing in mind they know the employee is in receipt of benefits which they retain whilst in low paid work, what is to stop an unscrupulous employer abusing these new rules and exploiting an employee, or exploiting emplyees that are on benefits, not bona fide workers who might find their avenues of employment dry up when the new worker is created.

And when it comes down to inspiration and hope, well, we won't get it because the leaders are always the lesser of all evils, not an inspiratonal character to start with.

Say Richard Branson in comparison to Camerooon.

We need leaders not career politicians, we need inspiration and belief not threats and punishment.

Be very careful what you wish for.

And even more careful who you believe in.

Wise words dbmtb, here's some more:-

“Anarchists know that a long period of education must precede any great fundamental change in society, hence they do not believe in vote begging, nor political campaigns, but rather in the development of self-thinking individuals.” Lucy Parsons
