Kona Kilauea 1997 - now living in Germany

Re: Kona Kilauea 1997 - experiment time

I'm with al regarding the crankset.

XT 739 looks quite good, is hasslefree, and goes well with the frame.

had my daughters 97 Lava Dome kitted in a similar designed LX crankset - works fine.

Re: Kona Kilauea 1997 - experiment time

no frame number!!!!

I wouldnt worry too much about that top tube dent - although that WOULD bug me!

have you tried a back wheel in it yet to see if it runs in the centre of the frame? make sure the rear end is not bent in any way, I had this issue with a 97 Lava Dome a few years ago

all in all though it doesn't look too bad, just sort that chainstay out :)

looking forward to seeing the build

Yep it passed the wheel and rear mech test :)

Re: Kona Kilauea 1997 - experiment time

Nice to see another Alonestar project coming together.

So what are the plans concerning the build? A friend of mine has one from the same year and dressed it in period xt parts with thumbies and tan sidewall tires, he shreds the hell out of it! He says it's a very nice geometry and slight difference in stiffness compared to his Explosif never really bothered him. I guess a respray is in order?

No no no no no, no respray especially after I preached to a few folks not to respray theirs! Don't get me wrong it's well used on the stays but the rest of it is in good shape. So Krust, proper clean, touch ups - she'll come up well. I've learnt the hard way that nothing matches the original unless you really shell out a fortune and even then, to me anyway, as soon as you remove the paint, you lose the originality.

excuse me for adding insult to injury
I guess you're right about the originality part, patina. Really, I'm a sucker for that too.
I was just a little concerned about some possible rust that might have creaped under the paint down by the chain stays. Maybe a good old xt shark fin is a ought to cover that up ;)

Re: Kona Kilauea 1997 - experiment time

Just a little update. Managed to triple check the alignment and we're sweet; rear mech hanger and wheels (from the Kula) - all good. Just ordered a new Cyber decal, CK headset incoming from paulswheels. Christmas looks like a good time to get down and start cleaning and treating.

I did check out the stays and compared them with the Explosif; they are definitely chunkier or the size / shape changes are more pronounced. I'll take some dimensions at some point.

The donor bike is here. I think it's a bit small for me:

Yesterday's horrid wetness met a very, very soggy trip back from Seven Sisters and not at all helped with half of SouthEastern disabled thanks to an evacuation at Charing Cross.

I've learnt that when it comes to builds, sometimes it's better to strip and flip than buy the components separately. In this case, the 98 Kula - the top (minus the Ku) aluminium Kona that year (and indeed in 97) - is kitted out with XT, XTR, Easton bars, X517 rims. All top stuff and all will look very nice and work very well on the Kilauea. If I'd bought this individually it would have cost a shed-ton more than the deal struck on this.

Riding a 16" frame when you're 6 2 = uncomfortable but fun! (Check out the steerer extention - just  ) It's so light, I almost fell off when I peddled hard  Anyway, if anyone is in the market for a tiny, higher-end aluminium frame then let me know (it'll go up for sale before Christmas along with the Z2's).
That's a good buy..

Re: Kona Kilauea 1997 - experiment time

Certainly a good buy! Bit small and garish coloured to my eyes, but well worth it for the parts.
