Hi, I've just joined after finding out about this site in MBUK.

I have a Klein Rascal with Pace RC30 (rigid) forks that I've owned for about 10-12 years now.
I was wondering what the frame/forks are like compared to a modern day bike. It obviously was expensive in it's day, but what sort of price would you have to pay to get and equivilent brand-new model. I was wondering what to do with it, whether to sell and buy new or keep and refurbish.

Couple of other questions as well:
Have anyone convert these to use V-Brakes with out an outer cable running along the outside of the top tube? Some sort of hanger or something?
Did this model origionally come with stickers or was Klein and rascal painted on?
Why don't modern bikes mention the weight of them anymore? Catalogs don't mention it, and the company website that I've looked at don;t mention it?
Can you get a Klein origional quality re-spray? How much would it cost?

Thanks very much in advance.
Chris

rascal

oh and klein and rascal are embossed in to the paintwork.......

just my opinion but i wouldnt convert it to v-brakes, just run a nice set of cantis !!
cheers

the debossing was available from 1993 onwards. the earlier Rascals (and all other Kleins) had decals.

factory re-paints were still possible last year and should still be but only with the current colors and lettering style. last number i have heard for a fade paint was $300.

vbrakes on the rear are not really necessary. good (e.g. XTR or XT) and well adjusted cantis with koolstop pads are more than enough on the rear. you can run Vs on the front if you have seperate shift and brake levers.
the pragmatic solution would be to drill the rear brake cable outlet a bit larger and run the cable housing through the top tube to the inlet which it then uses as stop. you would "destroy" the frame though if that matters to you. it generally takes away a bit of the market value but if properly done without damaging the paint it is acceptable for most.

this is the nicest solution i have seen so far but it looks custom made (and can still be improved)

Ok, thanks.
I decided to re-spray it myself.
It's already got XT V-Brakes so I'd rather stick with them.

Does anyone know where to get the Rascal stickers for the frame? There are loads of Klein ones on ebay, but no Rascal ones.

the ebay seller casign1997 has Rascal decal sets too. ask him if he doesnt have them listed, i am sure he has some left or can make new ones.
