Klein Rascal

Where's the serial number meant to be on the Rascal?

on the underside of the bottom bracket shell from 1992 on or on the underside of the rear drop outs if it is an older frame

Can't see anything!
I think it's a 1991 frame due to the diamensions.
There's nothing on the rear dropouts.

there are only those two places they have put them

if there's no number it either has been removed/filled, is filled with paint (wouldn't be original then) or it is a rare prototype which were not numbered.

Hi, thanks once again!
Both of those places are now down to bare metal (I'm respraying it).
There's nothing there, possibly a Klein Logo stamped onto the bottom bracket shell under the plastic cable guide though.
It didn't have the origional paint when I bought it 12 years ago!
I found a very small piece of red paint underneath the newer paint that looks like a similar colour to the one you just posted.
I think it's a 1991 model, due to the diamensions from centre BB - top of seat tube, which was specific to the 1991 model.
I assume all the prototypes were made before the production run, so it would make sense that it could be, with the diamensions that it's got.
It certainly doesn't look like any metal has been filed away from either of the places you mention.

EDIT: Is the blue bike above a Rascal? I think my drop outs are slightly different. It's not a smooth transition from the tube to the dropouts, there's quite a lot of weld there.
Chris

the blue one is a Top Gun (TG in the serial number) but it's basically the same frame as the Rascal. those are the typical smooth Attitude dropouts with the welds filed down

the Rascal got the same finish but sometimes a bit less refined

but the Adroit got most attention to such details

on the Fervor they tried to cut costs and thus the welds are not as smooth (but still vary)

a somewhat nicer Fervor (might be a Rascal frame though)

and a less nice example

do you have a pic of your frame?

Carsten

Ah, the dropouts are the same.
Is it safe to file/sand down the welds on the dropouts?

Also, do you know where I can get the cable liners that go through the frame? Or is there something else I can use?

The pictures arn't very good.
The brake bridge on the seat stays is very untidy if you look at it from underneath, almost like something you would see on a £100 bike!
All the pictures are of the same frame. It is currently in the white primer.

Yes it is a 1" threaded Mavic headset! Are they rare?
I wasn't planning on selling it.
The top nut, is fairly rounded, I had to use stilsons on it to remove it, I need to grind some new flats on it.

I havn't posted on the Rascal owners thread yet, I was waiting untill the bike is finished.

A couple of years ago I threw away loads of old bike parts, because I thought there was no demand for them! I had the oversize Alpinestars handlebars and stem, and I think I may have had the origional Klein bars and stem as well as loads of other stuff.

I weighed my Pace RC30 forks the other day, and found they weigh more than modern suspension forks (more than half the weight of the frame!) @ 2.2lbs. But I still consider then to be the best rigid fork there is. My second favourite is the Kona Project 2.

The bottom bracket came out with both bearings still attached, bit of a pain. They were stuck solid. I left them overnight in a container of Coke, then heated them up so they were red-hot and put them back in the Coke (becareful, it may explode) then hammered them off, much easier!
