On my way home from work, braked at lights and the back suddenly felt very strange....

The tyre had forced the sidewall of the rim outwards...

I was going slowly and the tyre didn't quite come off the rim.
All in all, a lucky escape and only a few hundred yards from home

Possibly wouldn't have happened had you been using spokes.

No - I sawed across the damaged part so that I could take a pic of the cross section.
