Bit late now but I'm pretty sure I could have done this for you on a surface grinder at work. Also don't assume because it's hard that it couldn't be turned down, a sharp carbide bit would cut that no problem. Would be happy to help if something like this crops up again.

I used to work for a firm that made cold forming tooling, and the guys on the lathes would regularly hard turn 68-70 Rc carbide with stellite inserts. Or, you get someone like me who's at work, bored at their computer to wander out into the shop and slice a few mm off with one of their WEDM machines. ;)

i understand that mr fluff i was a bike mechanic in the early 90s just thought the shape was remarkably similar...and only trying to help but hey I wont cramp your style chap seeya :roll:
 
It's hard to see but in this picture the XC Pro headset doesn't have that appearence on the bottom.

Not my style and nowt wrong with helping, I was just pointing out that because it looked similar (both black headset) it doesn't make them the same. This is old stuff, old stuff can be odd :LOL:
