Is this headset fitted right??? - READ ON!!!!!

It seems the baseplate/crown race has a 4-5mm step on, only confirmed when I took it back to my LBS to complain, and made them take it apart to check. I have never seen one like this before, (I always thought they fitted flush?), I have taken pics to allay anyones fears, but it does seem pretty obvious, but only when seen like this. Annoying cos I don't like it visually  , stupid XC PRO product :? .
And yes, I had a go about the frame grinding, but there is no damage, so being pretty chilled, I have let it go. ALL AGREED :?:

Cheers...

That's a nightmare, easy job to get right and just as easy to do a quick joey job with no harm - I fitted one last night with a hammer and a couple of blocks of wood (one with a hole drilled though it to mount the crown race)

rofl thats the tool i use to fit all my crown races

?

Not sure about that it looks a lot like the top race should the shiny exposed metal finish being the bit that gets seated in the top of the head tube...otherwise why would it be an exposed metal finish surely black like the rest of it ?
anyone got one of these to check ?
I have just comared it to a boxet xt version and it looks nothing like the crown race but a lot like the upper race

Sorry, I've just come back to this thread sooner to see the replies..
My post a few pages back was to see if they knew why or just guessing as nobody had put why.
If you look from the bottom you'll have noticed there was a lack of actual race. Fine if it was a cartridge headset but not if it's ball bearing like this signifying this may well be a different design, a search around the web shows that this is the design (there are no brilliant pictures to be honest)

I'm not sure but sometimes there may have been a protective cover over the bottom (or maybe my mate just added one). It is all designed around the grease guard to flush it out.

Would have saved you a trip :(

EDIT

Should add there is a later version with a nicer looking top. They may well have removed the clump at the bottom. I don't know though.

This headset was all boxed & NOS, still in it's little bag, but it would be interesting to see if anyone could confirm if this is correct (anyone got one fitted), it is just so visually unappealing

EDIT - ***can't see your top pic for some reason***

If you look in the top picture I posted in my EDIT you can see the silver part underneath.
Unfortunately the Velobase one doesn't show you the bottom but it does show you the top part separate. Not the easiest to convince anyone.

There were a couple of other options the shop should have asked you if you wanted to persue before resorting to permanently modifying your frame.

1) Another headset with a lower stack height could have been sourced.

2) If the headset was crucial to the build, the race in question could possibly have safely had the bottom protrusion turned down to lower the stack height. Reminds me of a +5 King race, and all that is is a regular race with a 5mm extra bit on the bottom.

2) The fork could have been professionally extended or one with a longer steerer could have been sourced.

All the above would have been viable options provided the shop had have called first.

Yes, I have a NOS whole groupset, so was wanting this to be used. If I knew somewhere that could safely turn it down, then I would jump at the chance, but I don't think it would be really possible. And yes, I know about the calling me 1st thing, but just to clear up what I put earlier, it was £30 total, including fitting of which £20 was extra, but as there is no damage, it is cheaper than getting a steerer extension.
