Is Retro faster?

Seriously I read this same old shit everywhere.

4X4 Forums:
"my IFS shitbox is just as capable as [insert live axle proper off-roader]" "had to tow out a brand new Defender the other day with my $1,000 shitbox Hilux, he just couldn't drive to save himself, I ended up simultaneously towing him out with my truck while I drove his free"

Motorcycle forums:
"I beat such and such MV/Ducati/BMW on my GT550 wif me courier bag on and all"

Road forums:
"Came across a bunch of MAMILS on their £10,000 Pinarellos and S-works, smashed them up hill and down dale on my cobbled together gaspipe steel rimmed 27" fixie in my cutoff shorts and ironic plaid shirt"

Anywhere anyone talks about riding a singlespeed:
"I'm the single fastest human ever off-road/my mate is the single fastest human ever off-road and heroically places midpack in enduro races with other washed up middle aged tax accountants and actuaries on his SS"

Spare the guff.

Sometimes you don't have to read it, you can be made to listen to it 'don't tell me you're going up there on that olde thing'

Re:

There is no way that retro is faster than modern when comparing the bikes, technology and components.

Judging by this thread there are some supermen riding retro and some wimps riding modern but that does not mean that the bikes are faster.

Retro is definitely better looking and more fun for your money though.

The worker on his clickety bike x wasnt superhuman, he'd likely just've been doing the same run for a ten stretch, he probably dont know he'd do very well on a near nos comfy rolling light retro...in a 25mile knock-up...loads of them about.

Met two olde boys one sunday after deciding to go back down to holme moss to make it have it, ff was i, got to the mast and clocked two males in rain mac's, both late 60's, both on Saracens (late '80's). One of em had owned an a.d. It come to pass they come down from Barnsley via that route every sunday for the last bla bla...neither were supermen. Both old boys were faster than any modern bike made if it dont ever show up to do it..lots of roadie but not lots of modern disc bouncys not matter the lock off.

The chew reser runner-upper is poss Superhuman but he's had a touch in that he's in love with his gliding Kili 853 and his bird, so naturally he paired the two together and allows the bird to ride his bike through woods and he chases on foot (she's done Gisburn)...every other day. yeah 100 miles of all climbs '**** all your honour' springs to mind. Same fella wont get on a bus if he owns feet.

I'm not a clever enuf fella to start to sum-in a feel-good factor and the brake debate is obviously slanted towards the modern. Personally a simple stem angle can easilly get me giddy for a do viewtopic.php?f=1&t=277411 and if the reet stems attached to something that rolls like a new offering then pumping out a load of lively miles feels like being sat at home watching a film (a gud en).

Nice link there with some great photos in that thread. Kinda takes you back. Happy days - the spirit of retro.

My club ride last Sunday here in Northern Portugal took us through an XC race course (after the competition finished of course). It was interesting to see what is called XC these days! Super short course, with the downhill part comprising a series of 10 very steep drop offs in quick succession. I cna't say whether retro was slower or faster, because we all walked the technical downhill bits anyway
