yes you are oversimplifying it, i had a friend with a bad back...he could still run and cycle but he would sometimes get such terrible pain he had to go lie down for the rest of the day. You'd be talking to him and all of a sudden he would be in pain to the point where he was crying and had to go lie down whilst popping serious painkillers.
Is there anything you can do ,work wise? even if its only a few hours a week.
Or ask thy P&M[clockwork orange reference ] to save a little off the dla.Birthdays if the relatives know youre saving for something could send a few quid instead of socks/gloves/hat.
Ive a friend who for the most part is pretty fit[not looking  jez some people  ] Getting into a mates yacht from the dingy slipped, flipped over the guard rail and landed on the sticky out bit of a self tailing winch.Xray showed that caused a V notch in his spine.Every now and again without rhyme or reason it flares up and he's confined to bed for usually about a fortnight. He's ex army and normally force himself to do things even when feeling sick or the flu but this really floors him.
Other than that hes fine, probably walks 15miles a day.
