Intermittent squealing on Clio engine ?

Belts/pulleys - put talc on them, only lightly with it running, it will stop right away if that is the cause. Lubricant to be avoided!

Surely if a bearing is gone in the alternator it is easy to hear with it ticking over and the bonnet open.

Probably a clutch thrust/release bearing though, the fact she presses the clutch and it goes away...People tend not to like spending 250-500 to fix the squeal and suddenly 'its not so bad'

try spraying some wd40/gt85 on the alternator/aux belts, see if that cures the problem.

if it does then the belt needs adjusting/changing.

if not, then..... :?

Why would you want to put lubricant on the alternator belt?
Jeez, if it's because it's slipping that it's squealing, in my opinion/experience that's the most likely reason, you'll just make it worse. :facepalm:

water/washing up liquid in a hand spray bottle does the same job if you're a wd40-phobic, doesn't smell as nice though :shock:

a littke squirt of wd40 on the the alternator belt wont hurt an if the squeak goes away then it shud be considered a tempory fix until you retension/ replace the belt

i doubt it will be that simple though i reckon clutch releaee bearing have you tried starting it with foot on clutch

Yeah clutch release bearing I did think, and I will test the car by starting with a dipped clutch, because that is the way I start my own and always have done from when I had a diesel escort years ago. But yes, a bearing squeak seems likely, so next to find out how easy or hard it is to get at the bearing on the clio as I just know she will be whinging at me forever otherwise and it is a whinny whinge the type that grates the nerves.

I once had a odd bearing on a VW camper engine, it annoyed me so much that one day down in Cornwall on a campsite I took the engine out myself and packed the bearing with grease, it was no problem after that. But easy to get an engine out on a camper two scissor jacks and plank of wood, four nuts and pull the engine off the gearbox. I miss that camper.

I know the feeling of recommending a car and it going wrong, I bought one two months ago for my cousin and she had complete clutch failure a week ago. Ultimately tough shit, there was nothing I could do nor could I tell before hand without stripping it! It is still a good car just needs a clutch, cars cost money to maintain and that is the way it goes. If she wanted no worries she should have bought new.

She can get one of her F**k Buddies to sort it out if she can't, there's enough of them that become immediately scarce when something needs doing.
