Belts/pulleys - put talc on them, only lightly with it running, it will stop right away if that is the cause. Lubricant to be avoided!
Surely if a bearing is gone in the alternator it is easy to hear with it ticking over and the bonnet open.
Probably a clutch thrust/release bearing though, the fact she presses the clutch and it goes away...People tend not to like spending 250-500 to fix the squeal and suddenly 'its not so bad'
