Rear solid axle wants to and does turn with the wheel. So I assume hub is knackered. Wanting to check anyway I try to take the 6 speed shimano freewheel of with my FR-1 tool. It does not budge one little bit. I intend to try again tommorrow with a socket on the FR-1 tool and a very long breaker bar (I need to buy the socket first). I know the vice trick but in woodworking vices that is not a good trick.

I figure I can't get good access to the hub with the freewheel in place and I also assume the wheel has had it if I can't get the freewheel of to try to service the hub.

Any tips on getting stuck freewheels of. I tried plus gas on it and left it overnight.

The vice trick isn't really a trick - it's standard practice in most bike shops for freewheel removal - it's very difficult to do with a breaker bar because you can't hold the wheel still - I'm sure there's a mechanic shop of some kind near you that would lend you a vice for the 60 seconds or so it will take to remove those cogs.

I have had another idea. Remove the wooden inserts in the vices! Stupid stupid, stupid and pu the tool in the vice.

One option is to get a mate to sit on the wheel (when it's vertical) and brace it with his hands. You can even do it yourself with practice. I had a shite vice for way too long....
