What was actually wrong with the frame, before cutting the bottom bracket out, it's not obvious from the pictures?

The frame fractured. I've decided not to post pictures because Trek have been fantastic and I'd hate to think some scumbag decided to try and get a new bike from them by trying to force a similar failure.

I see that bike has a worn out part that's surplus to requirements.

I worked at a Triumph dealership when I was at college at the time the first Daytona 595 bikes were coming out. There was bit of a kerfuffle about a frame so it had to be replaced. I had to strip bike, saw the headstock off which went back to Triumoh so they could re-issue the same frame number then build the bike up again. I did have a nice piece if sculpture in the living room for a while
