Honest question - what's so great about Kleins?

Btw c'dales had fatter tubes back then and was also filet braced.

Neither Cannondales, nor Kleins were 'fillet brazed'.

You beat me too it. One of my cycling pet hates. For the record, they are constducted by laying down large welds which are then filed with a belt sander. No bronze braze!! Looks the same but isn't.

As for the Klein thing. I ownedone a few years back. Not nice to ride, terrible riding position too. An early Cannondale rides much nicer and a minter costs a tenth of an average Klein.

That said, they do look damn sexy and certainly have that X factor.

Well sort of "fillet brazeing", its a two pass weld where the weld is grinded.

So nothing like fillet brazing then. 'Faux fillet' maybe if you want to be picky, but there is no brazing involved.

The end result is the same - a great looking bond

Klein track bike at the New York Bike Show, February 1975. Plain ugly I agree!

I see kinda both sides to it, really - BITD I was vaguely aware of them, but they never grabbed my interest.

Late 80s, early 90s, I probably saw Pace bikes as aspirational - although I don't think I was ever hugely motivated to gaze longingly or crave owning one. Truth be told, I don't now, either - but if you'd have asked me, BITD, what I would have bought, with a largely unfettered budget, would probably have been a Pace.

Nobody I knew then seemed to talk about them, least not as I can recall, and I never encountered any out on the trails. Up until joining retrobike, the only other discussion I had about them, was once on holiday in 95, where a couple we met and spent time with mentioned he had one. Here's the thing, though - beyond talking about his bike, I don't remember discussing where he used it, or what sort of riding he did. He just seemed to rap on a bit about having one, how much it cost, and what kit it had on it.

Personally, as an actual bike to either aspire to, or own and ride, they leave me cold. I don't have any dislike for them - I'm not a hater - they just do nothing for me, in terms of bikes I'd like to own. I'm largely more function over form, and probably have something of a Sheldon approach to bikes that I'd either like to own or use.

But here's the thing, on the threads dedicated to them, with loads of pictures, I have to say, I've seen some bikes that I'd truly class as beautiful and art. There's only perhaps a handful of other bikes I've seen that have anything nearing the same visual impact. So whilst from an owning or cycling perspective, they hold precious little interest, from an admiration and art appreciation perspective, I truly think there are many stunning examples. And whilst I may not truly know art, I know what I like when I see it (regardless of whether I'd want to own one or ride one).

So, personally, that's where I'm at - in terms of pure bike, non-nonsense, want-to-own-and-ride, I'm completely unmoved - but there's many a time I've looked and read the threads on them, and truly appreciated their beauty.
