cycling on the roads

Thought i was on a max power style forum for a moment!
For the person who said you are not supposed to ride two abreast there is no rule against it (i am a driving instructor).Obviously descretion is required, if you end up in hospital the fact that you broke no law is of no consolation whatsoever!
Was out myself the other day riding alongside a mate (gasp) when a chav in his subaru scalextric imprezza swerved past giving a well known hand signal implying a certain sexual practice! Unfortunately for him i recognised his number plate as a regular visitor to a neighbour, next time i saw him he had a few choice words! :p he of course would not even admit it, tosser! :evil:

Like I said before, if riding two abreast puts me at more risk of being killed then I'll happily ride single file all day long. Its not an anti-cycling thing, its to do with taking steps to help preserve my life so that I have a better chance of getting home to see my wife and baby daughter again. If that makes me a tool.. so be it. I think I'll be an electric drill.

Those of you that are arguing the merits of road tax and who deserves to be where are getting all emotional and missing the point. When you're riding a bike, your first, in fact probably your only priority is to ride in such a manner as not to increase your chances of being killed no matter what your rights are. If that means riding single file just in case some twat in an Impreza comes screaming up from behind you, so be it. Better a live tool than a dead cyclist.

If you read that sentence carefully the tool jibe was aimed at people who think it right to cut up cyclists riding two up. If that is you then so be it. I always had you pegged as more of a dremel to be honest.

If you (or anyone else) goes out with their local road club on a weekend the ride will be two up most of the way round. Most of the ride will be down quieter country lanes/roads I'm sure. Also sure the group would single out where appropriate, i.e. busier A road.

If cyclists have to change their habits on the off chance some inconsiderate tool is driving like a idiot then surely we'll have to start changing our habits in all areas of life? Maybe I'll wear a stab vest next time I go into town on a Friday night?
 
Firstly I would like to apologise for one inflammatory remark I made. I feel strongly on the subject and there are a certain group of journalists and the media who are shaping public opinion that cyclists have no right to be on the road (number plates, RLJ's, Lycra louts etc etc).

Secondly fwiw inconsiderate road use by anyone, including cars, tractors, caravanners, cyclists is just plain antisocial and rude.
It happens to be more dangerous by vehicles due to their greater speed and weight, and also that cyclists' lack of protection means that they are likely to come worst off, regardless of fault. The adults who cycle on the pavement outside my home are as much a problem as the van driver who crashed into my garden and then drove off (on a dead straight road, crossing 3 m of pavement btw).

Because cyclists are vulnerable we need our heads examined if we needlessly expose or increase risks to us, and we definitely need to ride defensively.

I don't think that individual stories are much help here as none of the rest of use were there at the time and cannot judge the relative balance of the argument.
 
I love road cycling especially in cities.
I call it car jousting, racing for the lights, zipping past stationary vehicles, weaving between cars but at the same time showing courtesy to other road users where needed :D
I've ridden so many tarmac miles that I dont feel the least annoyed or feared.

I love the fact that it is immediately presumed by the thread starter that the cyclist was in the wrong even though no where in the article is it stated

Never a nice thing to read.

Some well reasoned posts, some not. Sad reflection on uk drivers attitudes when half immeadiately blame the cyclist.
