Jesus. I've got to get this off my chest. I've actually been rather astounding at some posters technical (lack) of wrenching abilities and the level of questions. In general, I try to offer practical advice on cases where I have experience, but the point is it is up to the receiver to digest and make a proper judgement. I've been literally amazed considering we are on a forum of essentially getting knackered crap restored into a rideable good looking shape. To push some sort of blame back to those who try to contribute is not on.

Ultimatly, if you are not confident to try anything technical and follow internet advice blindly without evaluating, go to the LBS and pony up instead.

For the specific issue, about fixing a cracked rim by drilling a hole I'm utterly speechless. A *ucked rim is a *ucked rim and no amount of drilling, brazing, soldering, duct-taping will fix this critical part to any thing like it's original state. This is basic basic basic basic.
the point being, if someone needs to ask the question, they probably aren't qualified to choose the best answer

you absolutely can(and should) come down on those spreading bad info

especially when some of the advice given is just dangerous

Had a friend do 4 years of schooling to become an engineer. He never got to drive a train once.

Anyone wonder why Rody doesn't post on here any more?

I remember that Ti frame repair/welding "straw" thread. I was cringing.

OK, I may have been hasty hollister. If someone is intentionly offering misleading advice that is deemed unsafe without any notion of sarcasim then they should potentially be booted off the site by the mods; or at the very least corrected.

I rest my point that it should be encouraged to get 2nd and 3rd opinions from a trustable source and if in doubt, go to the LBS. There are some great resources available from Parktool and St: Sheldon to help too, and I guess it's a whole other topic of the LBS doing shoddy work.

Let's be honest, I'm guessing the majority of people have learnt by trying themselves as a kid and getting a feeling for the materials in the hand. At the expense of accidents and mishaps; it's part of the learning. If anyone is serious but have doubts then I'm sure a LBS would be willing to take some cash in exchange for practical wrenching lessons.

They are the ones that scare me, or ones who can argue against the advice of genuine, respected experts. Anyone wonder why Rody doesn't post on here any more?

Why? He is not only an asset to the vintage mtb community but one of the best bike welders around. I hate to use the word idol but he's one of mine.
