I'm lucky enough to be a TIG welder amongst other things, so I always fuse the end of cables with a quick blast of the TIG arc.

Not when cables are being stored.I have 3 sets of cables(both brake and gear)measured up for my 2 bikes and the ends are now soldered,it makes cable changing so easier.
