Busy bike day. Built up my dream wheelset- vintage stainless Phil hubs onto gold Ukai 2.125 rims using some nice Alpine double butted spokes. Finished them off with some no name tyres that have a similar tread to the early Uniroyals, a nos 12/28 Shimano 600 freewheel and some nos Campag Record Super Corsa QRs. Really pleased with how they look and look forward to fitting them onto something.
Also had a solid day on the poor old Klunker. I TIG'd up the crack in the seatstay and removed the canti bosses on frame and fork. Brazed up a few dents and made a start on paint prep. Its going to be the same colour and i will just make good the repaired areas and re- lacquer it all. Also built up a new front wheel- huge heavy Arai 2.125 chromed steel rim onto an old Atom hub brake. Spokes were 13 guage robbed from an old post office bike and the spoke lengths were perfect. Just needs truing later tonight and its done. I just need to find a matching Atom rear drum now so i can build the second wheel. I'm curious to see what hub brakes are like, especially as the new wheels will add 11lbs to an already portly 37lb bike.
