Got a set of black Sugino/CODA cranks - was hoping I could persuade the white CODA lettering to leave, but it doesn't look like it's happening. However, lighter than my parts bin mismatched SR / MT60 crankset, so they're going on.
 
Why ruin? He doesn't change anything in frame, bike could be upgraded later. Can't see anything wrong with it, it's should be a rider, in fact I had similar plans about this frame. Winter goes bad, it's no time for finesse build.
 
Fats are not winter hacks (unless you like seat tubes with holes in the bottom) and should not be built as such. They deserve lightwieght quality parts, parts that will compliment the high quality of the frame and fork. Heavy wheels and componants just deaden the ride and thats what makes a Fat such a great bike.

Take your time and do it right. Have it ready for spring and keepmit away from winter.

Would you compromise on your own Fats Gazz?? You don't really feel the love for Fats do you despite owning three. I mean, one minute they are no better than On O*e and the next minute its fine to hang any old parts on them. Strange.

Anyhow. Today I froze to death riding into work. Minus 16 degrees and snowing again.

I build a bike to satisfy myself but wouldn't presume to tell others how to build there's. It's a bike not some holy relic and riding it is good enough for me however it is dressed.

I'm not telling him how to build it Gazz. Its been offered up for critique and I'm offering guidance, thats all. Its a special frame, his first Fat and if he wants to get the best out of it than I think it needs a good solid build. Its just an opinion.
 
I thought the FAT might spark some lively debate... It was never going to be a period build, see my previous brakes and bars reasoning. I'd rather have a bike I'm comfortable riding than one that's period correct. It's a low budget parts bin build, but I'm still trying to keep the weight down - and the fork, headset and cranks all fit that criteria. Plus I've got my lighter XT/Mav wheelset for spring.

It's not going to be particularly pretty, but it should fit the bill. It won't have cost me a packet, it'll still be reasonably light with a decent fork, brakes and cockpit that suits me. And if I get on with it, I can upgrade components as and when I can afford it.

Now how much for disc tabs?
