1994 Manitou DH, Beneke Replica

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

Looks good. Could sand & polish the whole frame as someone on here did with theirs, sounds a pain though, perhaps just the headtube!

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

If it's a small area then nobody will notice, mine could be put down to cable rub.....

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

Cable rub, what's that ;) I've messaged Danson, will wait and see what he says.

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

The frame's still sitting in my bedroom so it's about time I got my finger out and get this sorted.

Have been working on finishing the decal designs in Illustrator. Not bought anything for it so far other than some grip shifts. Can't say I was a fan of the old ones but they all seemed to use them. Have a few bits on my watch list though.

Trying to work out a build list and not sure about saddle or cranks, any suggestions? Haven't decided on pedals either, perhaps XT M730 bear traps? Not sure what DH'ers used around that time.

Would like to find a Manitou chain guide but not sure if I'll be able to. Not sure if it was an optional extra but some product photos shows the DH with and others without.

The EFC's are 1¼", think the idea of swapping the crown and steerer to 1⅛" and adding a reducer might be a good idea to strengthen the head tube a bit and make it easier to find a stem. But not 100% sure about messing with them.

Have added the first of my wanted list in the forum.

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

Finished the decals. They're as close to mm perfect as I could get. Couldn't find a font that exactly matched so drew the top tube lettering from scratch.

Am unlikely to replace the swing arm or down tube decals as they're good enough, don't want to replace originals unless I have to, but seemed a shame not to draw them all.

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

Ended up taking long enough to do. I've messaged Jurgen to see if he can remember anything more of his Reebok Eliminator bike. Depending on the answer depends how I'll build it. Also thought of a neat finishing touch I'll try and do.

Get you finger out, you're as bad as me!

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

Just heard back from Jurgen about what he can remember about his '94 Mammoth bike. The stem was an Answer A-Tac and the saddle was a SDG, he thinks he was running IRC tyres that year. He can't remember what the bars were but they weren't Club Roost which narrows it down (but no idea what they might be yet).

His bike was a prototype, the main obvious difference is the EFC's used the Manitou 3 crown and was quill whereas the production version used a different crown and was aheadset.

He sent a couple of better quality pics too (click to open them in flickr and enlarge). The first one is from Mammoth, the AC cranks look grey but they are blue. Can't think what the seatpin would be starting with NE (unless that's unrelated advertising) but is also blue. Think the front QR is the black Ringle the EFC came with, looks skinny simply as it's edge on.

Link to some rubbish quality pics but you can see the AC chain guide and the size of the label on the front tyre:

Front QR: Standard black Ringle through axle.
Front Tyre: IRC GeoClaw
Rear Rim: Ritchey Vantage Pro WCS 32h
Rear Hub: Ringle SuperEight, blue (best guess as Ringle were sponsors)
Rear QR: Hard to tell so go with Ringle to match the front.
Rear Tyre: WTB Velociraptor (the IRC was replaced due to mechanical, front Velo's weren't available yet)
Handlebars: Answer Alumilite custom anodised blue (best guess going by the shape and that it wasn't a Club Roost). Need to get it anodised blue.

Headset: Chris King 2Nut, black (going by its profile)
Saddle: SDG Kevlar/Serfas Kevlar, not sure yet.

Additional
Down Tube Decal: Logo/graphic of German clothing company called Sunshine, now defunct.
Seat Tube Decal: Shannon
Fork has boots but rear hasn't.
Fork is using the Manitou 3 crown.
The AC chain guide you see in some photos can't have been used in the Eliminator final as he changed rings during the ride. Unless it's a guide type I don't know about.

Will update the list if anything more is identified.

Re:

Going by those pictures.
In top pic.
Seat post is not the dedicated manitou/ringle post, head clamp area looks wrong.
Rear qr looks a bit like a standard m900?
Front qr might be a ringle cam twist?

Did he say what was written on the down tube? Looks like something with a heart shape?

But my eyes are not the best lol.

I don't know mate, rep bikes can be so hit and miss, especially as they changed parts/components day to day, some times during races.
And trying to get info from riders from back then is a task, the story's I have heard there was quite an extreme party atmosphere back then :-D

Re: 1994 Manitou DH

No the seatpost doesn't look right for a Ringle or Manitou/Ringle but couldn't come up with anything starting NE although that could be a red herring.

The front qr could well be the standard black Ringle the EFC/DH came with, just looking edge on. It was late, wasn't thinking straight!

You're right about components changing every five minutes plus, even without partying, I can't remember all the parts I put on my bike back then so it's no surprise he can't either.

I've not asked about the down tube decal yet, was going to decide what to do first before pestering any more.

Need to decide what way to go with it. I guess his was basically a red, white (silver) and blue theme with the purple seat qr being the odd one out. I'd probably have gone gone with red, white and black to tie in with the forks and decals.
