Hmm, wonder how easy it is to strip it off and have it re-anodised then?

We looked into this when I suggested to barneyballbags that he should reproduce an aqua zaskar by getting a ball burnished frame anodised. Turns out that frame anodising is not possible, something to do with the anodising tank not being large enough.

According to the experts the stripping is relatively easy if you have a large enough tank and a big enough bottle of draino or some other plumbing pipe clearer (caustic soda), but you need to remove it and wash it in a timely manner or the frame will be damaged. Personally, I don't like mucking about with chemicals so I've just decided to enjoy mine as it is. I suspect I could have it glass beaded and then polished up if I wanted to be anal about things.

Re: 1994 GT Zaskar Aqua: Here we go again.....

There are anodizers that possess such tanks which is how they do motorcycle parts, auto parts etc.

For a frame, I have been quoted 200USD for pre-polishing, prep and anadozing. Not cheap by any means but a reality none the less.

So how did GT do it then? Or you mean you'd have to search for someone with a big enough tank?

I think it is technically possible but finding someone with a tank large enough to fit a frame might be difficult (and I don't think I would trust anyone who doesn't specialise in anodising bike parts to do the job)

Have a look here http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... p;t=286395

I did send a pm to rampage and he replied with some useful information on the subject but I no longer have the pm

@smithjss70 your serial number indicates march 98. You got a link to the build thread?

@dirttorpedo don't worry it won't be changing hands again
....I built the ball burnished frame with the parts originally intended for this bike so it'll be built a bit differently this time

I have not started a build thread in the < 97 forum. I know the date of mfg says '98' but I assume that suggests it would have been a '99' model (could be wrong).

This is my parts plan though:
Using all red components against the ball burnished frame. It goes out for professional polishing next week and I'll splash the following on soon thereafter.

Actually thats not bad imo - just over £100 then and I think thats pretty good when you think of all the polishing you'd save *looks at sore hands  *

Edit: you're not polishing yours yourself? Aww, you'll miss out......blood, sweat and tears breeds fond appreciation :D

Re: 1994 GT Zaskar Aqua: Here we go again.....

I've done my fair share of polishing. I'll leave it in more capable and professional hands.

Would of thought that's a 98 model if made in March 98. Or a 99 If made after July. Though my 94 ball burnished frame is older than some 93 frames I've seen on here :?

Anyway, That is gonna look fantastic with all those red parts. Looking forward to seeing that in readers bikes soon
